Let Us Study
After a place grew Neoclassicism, a revival of Classical thought and
style that passed through art, philosophy and politics. Now, it was
the age of democracy, this is the time of the American and French
revolutions, and the era of the common man. This new era carried on to
music. Between roughly 1750 and 1820, the music now simpler, lighter,
and with less ornamentation took on the style later categorized as that of
the Classical Period.

 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg,
Austria. He was the sole surviving son of Leopold and Maria Pertl
Mozart.
 He is a child prodigy and most amazing genius in musical history.
 He experimented in all kinds of music and composed over 700 works.
 Due to mismanaged finances he lived his life in poverty, died young
and buried in an unknown grave.
 His famous compositions were: “The Marriage of Figaro” (1786), “Don
Giovanni” (1789), “The Magic Flute”, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Symphony
No. 4 in G Major, and Sonata No. 11 in A Major K311.

VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC


 Sonata – a multi-movement work for solo instrument. Sonata came
from the “Sonaire” which means to make a sound.
 Sonata Allegro Form - the most important form that developed during
the

Classical era consists of 3 distinct sections:


 Exposition – first section in sonata-allegro form
 Development – is the middle part of the sonata-allegro form
 Recapitulation – repeats the theme as they first emerge in the opening
exposition.
 Concerto – a multi-movement work designed for an instrumental
soloist or
orchestra.
 Symphony – a multi-movement work for orchestra, the symphony is
derived
from the word “Sinfonia” which means “a harmonious sounding
together.”

Classical Opera
There are two distinct styles of opera, Opera Seria and Opera Buffa were
developed during the Classical Period.

 Opera Seria – a serious opera usually implies heroic or tragic drama


that employs mythological characters inherited from the Baroque
period.
 Opera Buffa – a comic opera from Italy made use of everyday
characters and situations, spoken dialogues, lengthy arias and was
spiced with sight gags, naughty humor and social satire.
EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK

This music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a 1787 composition for a


chamber ensemble. “A little serenade” was a German title rendered more
literally as “a little night music”. The serenade was completed in Vienna on
August 10, 1787.

•Classical period music has a lighter, clearer texture than Baroque music
and is less complex and it is mainly homophonic.
•Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was part of the Classical Era and he was a
musician capable of playing multiple instruments.
•His famous compositions were: “The Marriage of Figaro” (1786), “Don
Giovanni” (1789), “The Magic Flute”, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Symphony
No. 4 in G Major, and Sonata No. 11 in A Major K311.
•EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK is a famous composition of Mozart. It is often
rendered more literally as “a little night music.” It is completed in Vienna on
August 10, 1787.
•The melody is simple and easy to remember. There is extensive use of
dynamics and phrases are very regular and of the same length. It has a
lighter, clearer texture than Baroque music and is less complex. It is mainly
homophonic, using a clear melody line over a subordinate chordal
accompaniment, but counterpoint was by no means forgotten, especially
later in the period.are most of the characteristics of Classical Period music.

It's a classic tune from the Classical period. Listen to how the melody sits
perfectly on top of the lower strings - it's eminently hummable. When it
comes down to it, that's what defined the classical period's sound. It was the
first time when melody really became the most important thing to get right.
