In this book
The Mathseeds program teaches children the core maths and problem
solving skills needed to be successful at school.

Each online lesson begins by introducing and modelling a mathematical

concept. The child then completes a wide range of activities where they
practise the new skill. These activities present the content in many
different ways so that children learn to use and apply each new skill in a
variety of situations.

This book is designed to supplement the online program with more

exercises in the core mathematical concepts. Each unit focuses on a topic
within the main learning strand, presenting a series of pen and paper
activities, word problems, puzzles and games to practise their skills and
understanding.

The topics in this book align with the following components of the
Australian Curriculum:

Australian Curriculum content codes and descriptions

ACMNA053 – Apply place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers
to at least 10 000 to assist calculations and solve problems

ACMNA054 – Recognise and explain the connection between addition and

subtraction

ACMNA055 – Recall addition facts for single-digit numbers and related

subtraction facts to develop increasingly efficient mental strategies
for computation

ACMNA059 – Represent money values in multiple ways and count the

change required for simple transactions to the nearest five cents

ACMNA060 – Describe, continue, and create number patterns resulting

from performing addition or subtractiont

Go large and add Algorithms

Play in pairs or trios rr . rrr

You will both need a pen and paper, plus a 10-sided spinner.
(See page 47 for a printable spinner.)

Aim of the game: Make the largest possible total.

1 You each draw a 3 x 3 grid. Hide your sheet from the

other person.

2 Use the first 2 rows to make two 3-digit numbers:

Take turns spinning a digit on the spinner.
In secret, each player must decide which place value they
will put each digit in and write it in a box in the top 2 rows.
Once written, a digit can’t be changed. Spin again.

3 After 6 spins you both have two 3-digit numbers.

Add the numbers, using the bottom row for the answer.

4 Compare the answers. The winner has the largest total.

Variations:
Aim to make the smallest 4-digit number.
Use a 3 x 4 grid and make 4-digit numbers.
Use a 4 x 3 grid and add three 3-digit numbers.

Check your answers Problem solving strategies

1 Check the last digit — should it be odd or even?

a 42 + 82 = 123 ____________________
b 234 + 125 = 359 ____________________
c 473 + 465 = 937 ____________________
d 94 - 38 = 55 ____________________
e 879 - 512 = 368 ____________________
f 427 - 105 = 322 ____________________

2 Round off the numbers and estimate an answer — is it close?

a 634 + 213 = 947 ________________________________________
b 789 + 140 = 929 ________________________________________
c 984 - 204 = 780 ________________________________________
d 875 - 465 = 310 ________________________________________
e 438 + 267 = 705 ________________________________________
f 729 - 315 = 314 ________________________________________

3 Reverse the operation — do you get the right answer?

a 415 + 149 = 564 564 - 149 = __________
b 510 + 345 = 955 955 - 345 = __________
c 587 - 322 = 245 245 + 322 = __________
d 634 - 313 = 321 321 + 313 = __________
e 954 - 614 = 340 340 + 614 = __________
f 324 + 654 = 978 978 - 654 = __________
