RC Triggering.

This document describes a circuit using an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) that is triggered by an RC phase shift circuit. The RC triggering circuit allows control of the firing angle of the SCR from 0 to 180 degrees by varying the phase and amplitude of the gate current using a potentiometer. The circuit was constructed and its output waveform was plotted on a graph sheet to analyze the maximum and minimum firing angles that could be achieved.

RC PHASE SHIFT TRIGGERING OF SCR

AIM
To setup and design a RC triggering circuit using SCR and plot the waveform across resistor load
and SCR.

COMPONENTS REQUIRED
1. SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier)
2. Step down transformer.
3. Diode (IN4001).
4. Resistors (560 Ohm, 270 Ohm).
5. Variable resistor (47k ohm).
6. Capacitor (0.1 uf).
7. DSO.
8. Connecting wires.

THEORY
SCR is used in many areas of electronics. where they find uses in a variety of different industrial
applications and in particular for power control. It is able to switch large level of power with a wide
variety of different applications. It is also used in low power electronics where they are used in many
circuits from light dimmers to power supply over voltage protection.

The circuit of RC triggering is employed of simple construction which is vulnerable to run in

electronic laboratory and get a desired output that to taking cost consideration. which is further
used to also understand other types of triggering high level schemes. Illustrate the RC firing circuit by
varying the potentiometer, firing angle can be controlled from 0 degree to 180 degree. Capacitor C in
the circuit is connected to shift the phase of the gate voltage. Diode is used to prevent negative
voltage from reaching the gate cathode of SCR. In the negative half cycle, capacitor charges to the
negative peak of the supply voltage. During positive half cycle, capacitor charges through resistor R1
from the initial voltage -Vm. When the capacitor voltage becomes equal to the gate trigger voltage
of the SCR, the SCR is fired and the capacitor voltage is clamped to a small positive value.

The limitation of resistance firing circuit can be overcome by the RC trigger circuit, which
provides the firing angle control from 0 degree to 180 degree by changing the phase and amplitude
of the gate current. A large variation of firing angle is obtained using this circuit.

PROCEDURE
1. Collect all the components from lab store
2. Check all the given components
3. Set up the circuit as shown in figure
4. Connect the single-phase full wave-controlled rectifier
5. Turn on the power supply
6. Plot the input and output waveform on the graph sheet
7. Find out the maximum and minimum value of firing angle
8. Find out the waveform across loaded SCR.
RESULT
Constructed and studied about RC phase shift triggering of SCR and plotted the waveform on graph
paper.
