Subject Verb Agreement

Patrick discusses subject-verb agreement and some key rules. A subject is a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that performs the action of the verb. The verb describes the action, thought, or feeling of the subject. For subject-verb agreement, the subject and verb must match in number - a singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb. Examples are given of adding "s" to singular verbs for subjects like "she" versus no "s" added for plural subjects like "we". Pronouns like "you" and "I" are exceptions as singular pronouns that take plural verbs. When auxiliary verbs are included, the agreement is with the auxiliary verb rather than

On what I’ve learned in the topic subject verb agreement -- Subject can be a noun
pronouns or a noun phrase. It is also a person or a thing that causes the action and it
comes before the main verb. And about verb, verb is a word that tells us what is the
subject doing, thinking, or feeling that is describes the actions of subject. While the
subject verb agreement means the subject and the verb has to get along like they are
partners that they have to agree with each other. It means if the subject is singular the
verb has to be singular as well. And if the subject is plural the verb has to be in plural
too. As for the example, we have subject and action verbs like she, he, it which is
singular. And singular means only one thing so remember a singular verb needs a
partner which is s at the end so if the subject is singular which is she he and it we have
to add s at the end of the action verb like plays, jumps, walks. On the other hand, we
have a subject we and they which is plural. And one thing that I remember about plural
verbs unlike singular verb we should not add s or es at the end of the verb. Lastly, we
have a subject you and I. they are special case because they are singular pronouns but
need a plural forms of verb. I am very curious at first. You and I are for one person only
but we don't have to add s at the end of the verb just like she he and it. But they're an
exception to the rule. Subject verb agreement rules are different when our subject is in
the third-person singular. So that's when our subject is a he, a she or an it. The subjects
I and you are different. Even though they're also singular nouns, they take the plural
form of the verb. For example, like to go swimming. She likes to go swimming. Both of
these subjects are singular but the verb forms are different. If there is an auxiliary verb,
a helping verb, in our sentence like do or does in the present simple or am, is, are, was,
were in the continuous tenses or have or has in the perfect tenses then, we need to
think about our subject verb agreement because the auxiliary verb becomes the
agreeing verb, the verb that agrees with the subject. Like for example, the dogs don't
want it and the dog doesn't want it. We're going to the beach and he is going to the
beach. As we add more information to our sentences, they become more complex and it
might be difficult to know whether our noun is singular or plural. But I just always
remember that the same structure and rules apply. But we need to pay close attention
to where our subject is and if it's singular or plural because our verb must always match
the subject regardless of the words that come in between the verb and the subject. It
must always match.
