2 Systems of Equations Project - Overview and Rubric
2 Systems of Equations Project - Overview and Rubric
A. Materials:
● Guidelines and Rubric
● Word Problem
● Pencil
● Markers/Crayons/Color Pencils
● Copy Paper & Graph Paper
B. Your Task:
1. Pick a word problem that outlines a real world scenario with two unknowns.
Use the examples given to help you brainstorm!
2. Write a system of equations to model your word problem.
3. Set up your equations and solve using three different methods (graphing,
substitution, elimination). Clearly identify each method and show each step
for each method.
4. Independently which method you consider the best to solve the system and
present your rewriting alternative, use the Desmos Calculator, enter your
systems of equations, to verify that your graph is right.
5. Analyze how to solve a system of equations ‘the big picture’ and come up with
key facts to help out other students.
6. The final product is due no later than: THURSDAY , NOVEMBER 18th, 2022.
C. How you will present it:
1. Make a cover with a creative title and illustrations that refer to your
problem. On this cover you will include your name (first and last) and Algebra
class period.
2. The inside will have six pages (3 sheets of paper; use front/back):
● First page: The first inside page will have the complete problem written
out and you will define your variables
● Second page: This page will include your two equations
o You will write out both equations in y=mx+b, defining the slope and
the y-intercept for each equation
● Third page: Include a piece of graph paper where you have graphed the
system of equations.
● Fourth page: On this page, you will solve the system using the
elimination method. Show each step neatly. Show your solution checked.
Clearly mark/label your solution.
● Fifth page: On this page, you will solve the system using the
substitution method. Show each step neatly. Show your solution
checked. Clearly mark/label your solution.
● Sixth page: On this page, you will list out at least four key points that
an 8th grade student must know if they are going to write, graph, solve,
and check a system of equations.
o The last page should be the rubric page so that the teacher can grade your
booklet.
● This will count as a 20 points quiz grade in Q2.
● See the rubric on the next page for grading specifics.
Choose one of the following word problem choices to do your systems project
about:
● The school that Stefan goes to is selling tickets to a choral performance. On the first
day of ticket sales the school sold 3 senior citizen tickets and 1 child ticket for a total of
$38. The school took in $52 on the second day by selling 3 senior citizen tickets and 2
child tickets. Find the price of a senior citizen ticket and the price of a child ticket.
● Three coffees and two muffins cost a total of 12 dollars. Two coffees and four muffins
cost a total of 8 dollars. What is the individual price for a single coffee and a single
muffin?
● For some reason, in our math class, there are 14 more boys than there are girls. If a total
of 32 students are in the class, how many boys and how many girls are there?
● You will rent a catamaran. The company Playa Inc. charges $350 down payment and
$250 per day of use. The company Watermelon charges $650 and $200 per day of
use. How many days after the use of a catamaran by both companies is the cost the
same? Which company saves you more money, if you’re going to use the catamaran
for ten days?
● A chemist mixes a 12% acid solution with 20% acid solution to make a 300 milliliters
of an 18% acid solution. How many milliliters of each solution does the chemist use?
