Lecture 9 Level Crossing Rate

Level crossing rate (LCR) describes the rate at which a signal envelope passes a threshold with a positive slope. The LCR can be approximated for Rayleigh and Ricean fading and used to estimate mobile speed. Average fade duration is the time a signal is below a threshold. It impacts interleaver depth, which breaks up fades so error correction can overcome errors from fading. For a mobile traveling 60 mph at 900MHz, the maximum Doppler is 88Hz, resulting in an average 0dB fade rate of 81 fades/s and duration of 7.8ms.
