WASTE MANAGEMENT
Wastes are unwanted materials formed as a result of anthropological use- both domestic and
commercial. Waste management and segregation, is in simple terms, the methodology
followed for the proper disposal and re-utilization of the wastes thus created. Our project
explores the various methods of waste management and its segregation, including aspects
such as ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’, various disposal methods of wastes, various methods to
segregate wastes and sustainable practices and ending it with certain real-life case studies.
Data Sources
This section looks at the method of collecting literature and secondary data. First, we
looked through the internet and searched up various generalized and research articles on
waste management to get a gist of what we were supposed to do. Subsequently, we looked
through a book, ‘Waste Management Practices’ by John Pitchel to find out in-depth of
exactly what we were supposed to do. Then we came up with sub-topics to work on and
subsequently distributed our work. Finally, we worked on our subtopics separately. My
data sources are stated extensively under the sub-section of ‘Annotated Bibliography’. My
part has mostly used secondary data sources from various international websites such as
IAEA, UNEP and so on and also research papers from Google Scholars and the book that I
mentioned about earlier.
The sub-topics included under the project are- a basic introduction, segregation of wastes (wet
waste management and dry waste management), various types of waste and their management
techniques such as pharmaceutical waste management, E-waste management and so on, two
case studies and a conclusion. I will be doing the introduction, municipal waste, industrial
waste, medical waste and nuclear waste managements and sustainable practices. I shall also
be doing a case study on the ‘Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster’ and the subsequent
measures taken by Japan for the disposal of the nuclear wastes and the regulations created as
a result of its aftermath.
By researching on this topic, I hoped to learn in-depth about waste management and
segregation. I am from Kolkata, and we have a huge landfill called ‘Dhapa’ and I have
been there. The least that can be said, it is not the best method to dispose off wastes (or
visit) and generates a huge amount of pollution that severely harms my city. I have been
intrigued by this particular topic since a long time and I wanted to know how these wastes
can be disposed off properly so that it would not harm the people or flora or fauna around
us. I have been successful in finding that out, especially on the aspects that I worked on
and I am at least aware of waste disposal at the grass-root level so that I can work towards
reducing the waste generated and make others too aware of it. Thus, I have been successful
in learning and putting into practical use in whatever aspects I was looking towards.

Safety and Security of U.S. Nuclear Plants; Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board; Division on
Earth and Life Studies; National Research Council, Washington DC, United States of

2022- This source provided me with secondary data about the exact statistics of how humans
and land got affected and the emergency responses by Japan. This source contains excellent
statistical data on the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. This was a useful source to me.
3. John Pitchel, ‘Waste Management Practices’, Taylor and Francis Group- This source
gave me theoretical information on the types of waste management, particularly medical
and nuclear waste management. This was a great source to understand about these various
types of waste management. This was great source to learn theory and concepts from. This
was a useful source to me, although more conceptually rather than a source to make a
presentation out of.
4. UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) under the SDGs developed by the UN,

November 2022- This source was great for obtaining graphical data about various types of
waste managements. Thus, it was a great image source for me.
