GUIDANCE
You will need to produce a set of slides using PowerPoint or similar software. You can then
use these to support the delivery of your presentation. Any notes that you have used to
support the delivery of your presentation must also be submitted.

Your presentation will need to be video recorded and the relevant file submitted as part of
your assignment. The video must clearly show you delivering the presentation with your
slides in the background. A copy of the slides you have written and used will also need to be

Human Nutrition Scenarios:

Dietary Scenario 1 Michael is married with two teenage sons and is 42 years old. He works
long hours. At weekends he enjoys watching sports programmes on TV, but due to an injury
in a football match some years ago he is no longer able to swim or play football. He and his
wife both drive cars and enjoy eating out. His current weight is 98kg and he is 1.78m tall.
Michaels’ total energy and nutrients for a typical day are outlined in the table below. Energy
11,347kJ Fat 151g Of which saturated fatty acids 51g Monounsaturated fatty acids 47g
Polyunsaturated fatty acids 38g Carbohydrate 222g Of which starch, intrinsic & milk sugars
168g Non-milk extrinsic sugars 54g Calcium 960mg Vitamin C 78mg Fibre 14.3g

Dietary Scenario 2 Stephanie is trying to get pregnant but to date has had little success. She is
31 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall and her current weight is 5 stones and 10 pounds. Her waist
measures 25 inches and her hips measure 33 inches at the widest point. She wears size 6
clothes but these are loose fitting. During a recent visit to her GP blood tests were taken
which revealed that Stephanie is suffering from Anaemia. Stephanie needs to know what
dietary changes she needs to make in order to increase her chances of conceiving and what
eating habits she should adopt should she become pregnant.

Dietary Scenario 3 Imran is 12 years old and an avid gamer. He spends any time that he isn’t
at school on his games console usually with curtains drawn so he can see the screen properly.
His sister Ghazala complains to their mother that all he does is sit in his room, in the dark
playing games and eating rubbish such as sweets and crisps. As a result, he is becoming
overweight. Imran tripped whilst leaving the house for school one morning and was rushed to
A&E. The doctor at the hospital looked very concerned and she sat with Imran’s mother and
sister and gave them the news that Imran had fractured his left tibia and had been diagnosed
with malnutrition. She gave Imran’s mother a diet sheet which was high in vitamin rich foods
and she also prescribed a vitamin D supplement with a recommendation that Imran’s diet
needs to change, and he needs to get more sunlight. The doctor went on to explain that
Imran’s bone density was lower than you would expect for a boy of his age and his femurs
were becoming bowed. She then informed Imran’s mother that this was the start of a disease
that had all but been eradicated in Britain but was starting to increase again among people of
Imran’s age due to them having poor diets and not getting enough sunlight.

Question 1 -

You are required to write an academic report that demonstrates your understanding of
psychological research.

Your report must include the sections that are outlined in the assessor guidance document.
This can be found in the “Download Assessor Guidance” below.
GUIDANCE
The report should be written using a recommended structure and format. Conclusions and
recommendations must stem from your findings.

Indicative word counts for each section have been provided, but remember that your overall
report must not exceed the maximum word count for this assignment.

Relevant theory must be referenced and you must include a references list and bibliography.

The report should be a maximum of 2,000 words.

This word limit is the absolute maximum you are permitted. If you are over the word limit for
this assignment in any way you will receive your assignment back without further comment
or feedback.

Assessors guide:
SECTION ONE Explain what is meant by “the scientific method”. You should identify what
is meant by the scientific method, the methodology that makes psychology scientific, and
explain the benefit of this in terms of the validity of psychological research, for example,
research designs (repeated measures, independent measures design) and research methods
(sampling strategies, variables – IV, DV and the control of extraneous variables). (Indicative
word count – 300 words)
SECTION TWO Outline two research methods, one experimental and one non-experimental,
used in psychology study and discuss their strengths and weaknesses. Describe the key points
of one of the experimental methods (laboratory, field or natural) and evaluate this method.
Describe the key points of one of the non-experimental methods (naturalistic observation,
questionnaire, interview, case study) and evaluate this method. (Indicative word count – 300
words)
SECTION THREE Luke is 13 years old. He is behaving in a very aggressive manner at
home. This is becoming an increasing concern for his mum and she confides in her friend that
her daughter, Kate, was never as aggressive as her brother. What is going on? Apply
psychological understanding to explain Luke’s behaviour. You need to explain why Luke
might be behaving in this way using two of the following psychological approaches:-
Biological, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Cognitive and Behavioural (this includes classical
and operant conditioning and social learning theory). You need to outline the main elements
of the two chosen approaches and provide an evaluation of both approaches by considering
their strengths and weaknesses. (Indicative word count – 500 words)
SECTION FOUR Read the following details about The Pygmalion Effect by Rosenthal and
Jacobson 1968, a significant psychological study. Professor Rosenthal, of Harvard
University, and Jacobson, a principal of an elementary school in San Francisco, carried out an
interesting field experiment to determine whether teachers’ expectations of students’
performance actually had any effect on how well the students learned throughout the year.
Did what the teachers expect of their students come to fruition? To start their study,
Rosenthal and Jacobson gave 18 classes of students, aged 4 to 16, an intelligence test so that
the researchers could see if there was a development through the year in which they carried
out the study. Then they chose 20 per cent of the students at random and told the teachers that
these children showed ‘unusual potential for intellectual growth’, and that they could be
expected to ‘bloom’ during the year. However, because they were randomly selected, there
was no relationship between the score they achieved on the test and this claim made by the
psychologists. At the end of the school year the students were retested. Those labelled as
intelligent showed a significantly greater increase in test scores than the other children who
were not singled out for the teacher’s attention. The researchers explained this by using the
‘selffulfilling prophecy’ that the teachers’ expectations influenced the performance of the
students. Is this study ethical? Refer to the ethical guidelines for psychological research and
state your reasons. Discuss some other research in your course materials that have led you to
consider the importance of ethical guidelines for psychological research. (Indicative word
count – 500 words)

Module 4 – Human Reproduction, growth and development

You are required to write an illustrated report demonstrating your understanding of the human reproductive
systems. Your report must cover the areas outlined below.

• An explanation of the structure and functions of the male and female reproductive systems.
• A discussion of the role of hormones during key developmental stages to include gametogenesis, puberty,
pregnancy and the menopause.
• An explanation of the processes and sequence of events during fertilisation, implantation, foetal development
and childbirth.
• An explanation of placental function during pregnancy.
GUIDANCE
Relevant theory must be referenced where appropriate and you must provide a references list and bibliography.

Your report should contain appropriate drawings and diagrams to support your commentary. If these are taken
from published sources they must be referenced accordingly.

The report should be a maximum of 2,000 words in length.

This word limit is the absolute maximum you are permitted. If you are over the word limit for this assignment in
any way you will receive your assignment back without further comment or feedback.

Case Study – Approaches to Health Emma Jones is 38 years old. She has 5 children. Ben is
12 years old, Amy is 10 years old, Ruby is 7 years old, Jack is 4 years old and Jade is 18
months.
Emma’s partner, Matt, left the family when Jade was born. Matt lives with a new partner in a
housing estate near to Emma’s home. He drinks heavily and visits their children
inconsistently. When he has had a lot to drink, he is loud and argumentative, which upsets all
the children.
Emma has struggled to make ends meet since Matt left home. She worked part-time in a pub
until Jade was born, but since then she has been unable to work because she has no-one to
look after the children.
Emma does not smoke or drink but since she has been spending a lot of time in the house.
She has been comfort eating and has gained about 2 stone in weight since Matt left. She has
also felt depressed because she does not have any friends to go out with and her mother lives
too far away to help with the children.
Her older children have caused her a lot of worries too. Ben has been refusing to go to school
and the teacher has warned Emma that if he misses any more time, she will have no choice
but to refer the family to social services. Amy has recently been in trouble with the police for
shoplifting with a friend.
Emma went to her doctor six weeks ago after she discovered a small lump in her breast. She
was referred to a consultant at a hospital several miles away who later performed a biopsy
and has now been referred her to have her lump surgically removed. There is a possibility
that Emma could require more radical surgery in the near future.
Emma had agreed to have the lump removed but only as a day patient because she needs to
get home to her children. On the day of her surgery, Emma got the children ready for school
and took the baby to a day nursery to be cared for while she was away. She arranged with a
neighbour to collect the two youngest children and look after them until she returned home.
Ruby and Amy would walk home from school together. Emma did not have time for
breakfast, but had a cup of tea and took some biscuits to eat on the bus on the way to the
hospital.
When she arrived at the hospital, she started to worry about what her lump might mean. She
feared the worst because her Nan had died of breast cancer 10 years ago and her mum had
been treated for it 5 years ago. This may have had an impact on how Emma has reacted to her
own diagnosis. At the hospital, which is very big, Emma had to ask several people to help her
find her way to the breast surgical unit before she finally arrived there at 10 am. When she
arrived at the ward, Emma started to feel really anxious because it was so busy with lots of
people dashing here and there.
Nobody seemed to have time for her so she waited in the doorway uncertain what to do next.
Jane Lloyd is 23 years old and has worked on the surgical unit as a newly qualified staff
nurse for the past 6 months. She really enjoys her work and gets on well with all the other
staff on the unit. Jane knows that the day ahead will be busy and there will be lots to do to
keep on top of her workload.
Jane greeted Emma with a huge smile and started to assess her in readiness for her admission
to the ward prior to her surgery. She noted that Emma was late for her appointment but
decided not to say anything to her as she looked very flushed and worried. The hospital had
sent a letter by post beforehand giving information about being admitted to the surgical unit
but Emma did not read it.
One important instruction was that she should not eat or drink anything on the morning of her
admission to hospital. Jane asked Emma if she had had anything to eat or drink that morning
and Emma told her that she’d had a cup of tea and biscuits about an hour before. At this, Jane
became agitated. She said to Emma: "Why did you do that? We sent a letter telling you not to
eat or drink before your operation.” Emma was shocked and retorted: “Well how was I to
know, I’ve got better things to do than read letters!” At this, Jane went to seek assistance
from a senior staff nurse.
The senior staff nurse informed Emma: “Because you have had something to eat and drink
you will have to go to the end of the list”. Emma became angry and protested: “That means I
won’t get home until late and my children will be waiting for me”.
The senior staff nurse offered to ask the surgeon for advice and left Jane to finish her pre-
operative assessment so that at least Emma will be ready for her surgery. The surgeon agreed
to accommodate Emma, but warned her that operations are delayed for many reasons and so
it is important that she is fully prepared the next time if she has to undergo further surgery.
