The interface with the instrument is made with a 96 wires flat cable (J104). This connection corresponds to
the upper instrument electronic rack backplane bus (J100 to J109). By this way the GenX receives the low
power supply voltages (+5V, +24V, +12V and –12V), the XSN communication signals, the display signal,
pressostat interlock and the master to slave control signals (XpsReset and XpsReady).
The “water cooling system” and the “X-ray safety interlock controls” are connected via M8 connector to
XPSC.
The mains voltage (230 VAC) is connected XPSI board via J2 connector.
The J3 on the XPSI board is used to connect the 230 V “X-ray lamp ON”. 24 VDC Lamps are connected to
J407 of XPSC.
For the X-ray tube high voltage connection, a “federal standard” connector is plugged in the J402 of the
XPSM assembly.

XPSI assembly
The XPSI assembly is made with the XPSI board and the cooling system for the power components. The
XPSI board converts the 230 VAC from the mains voltage into a DC voltage from 360 V to 440 V. Pay
attention to that the DC voltage is referenced to the mains voltage.
XPSR board
This board will be used to emulate the non-GenX system for field retrofit capability. With this board
installed, the instrument uses the XPS interface.
XPSC board
This board is the interface with the XQM master board in the instrument. It controls all functions in the
GenX like the different servo-loops for the kV, mA and filament PS and few watchdog safety systems. It
controls too the different external parts like the safety interlock and the water cooler system.
XPSP assembly
The XPSP assembly is made with the XPSP board and the cooling system for the power component. The
XPSP board converts the intermediate DC voltage (360 V- 440 V) into AC voltage sources, which supplies
current to the filament transformer and the HV transformer.
Multiplier assembly
The multiplier assembly is made with the following parts:
XPSM board
Filament transformer
HV transformer
Multiplier box
Cooling system
The XPSM board has three main functions: the filament power supply (rectifier/voltage and current
measurement/transformer and X-ray tube connections), the HV measurement and the emission current
measurement.
The filament transformer via the XPSM board is used to supply up to 120W to the X-ray tube filament.
The HV transformer via the multiplier is used to supply up to 4200W to the X-ray tube anode.
Each board has its specific position in the rack. There are no keys to prevent the connection of a board to the
wrong slot.

2 GENX DESCRIPTION
Two processors are used to control all functions. One is a micro-controller (µC) and the other is a “digital
signal processing” (DSP) processor.
The µC does dialog with the instrument master board XQM of the electronic rack and controls the DSP, the
filament power supply and some background safety checks.

Description
The main functions controlled by the XPSI board are the mains (230VAC) power factor correction for the
current, the mains current limitation and the X-ray lamps control.
The mains voltage is used via a filter and a relay. When the generator switches on, the relay is energized to
close both contacts. After the rectifier diodes, the FET1 is used to open the circuit if the current is above a
current limit. When the FET1 is open, the current flow through the integrated diode D1of the FET circuit,
due to the inductor L. When the current is below a current limit the FET1 will drive.

Figure 2.13
The 400V from the IGBTs on the XPSP board, via XPSM board goes to the HV transformer. At the
transformer secondary the voltage changes according to the IGBT1 and IBGT2 ON time. The maximum
voltage is near 12000 V. The full wave multiplier increases six times this voltage to reach at maximum
70000 V. Two dividers are used to monitor the high voltage. The command board uses one of them to
control the HV via the servo loop function according to asking high voltage (called “kV” in the WinXRF).
The second is used to control the first via a subtraction function.
The emission current is measured at two positions. The first position is the multiplier entrance current, which
represents the high voltage current. The second position is the current that return from the filament
(Kirchoff’s current law). The control board uses the first to control via the servo loop function, the asked
emission current (called “mA” in the WinXRF). The control board, to calculate the leakage current, uses
both measurements by subtraction function. The leakage current corresponds to the “multiplier absorbed
current” minus the “filament return current”. When the leakage current is not coherent, the control board
prevents to switch power on or if the power is on, switches it off. See table after for details.
You can retrieve the leakage value by using the terminal mode command explained after:
The low voltage power supply voltages and the temperatures are checked in “watchdog” mode. Periodically,
in background task, the control board accesses to the 8 channels 8 bit analogue to digital converter (ADC). A
fatal alarm will be issued if the values are not coherent or if it is not possible to communicate with the ADC.
The multiplier box is cooled by water (Only in high power application). Two fans cool the rest of the
multiplier assembly.

HV servo-loop control
The control board receives the asked HV from the PC software application via the COM port and the
instrument master board. The asked HV is compared with the real HV to generate the HV error, which is
used through the PID corrector to PWM duty-cycle. The PWM signals control the power stage on XPSP
board to supply the right voltage according to the HV error. The XPSM assembly transformer and multiplier
increase this voltage to generate the real HV. The DSP evaluates the values each 50 us.

The rest of the bloc diagram works like a controlled current source. I.e., the filament current changes
according to the control voltage. 1 volt corresponds to 3.76 amperes. The set-point voltage is compared with
the current sensor voltage to control, via the proportional corrector, the PWM duty-cycle at 40 kHz. The
power board contains the power stage, which generates the power for the transformer. The transformer is
used to increase the current at the right level (up to 12 A). The filament receives a DC current through four

The rectified input voltage is weighted by this voltage error to become the current reference for a second
servo-loop. The real current, to generate the current error, is compared to this reference. The GPFC corrector
uses the current reference, the real current and the current error values to control the PWM duty-cycle, which
controls the Power MOS FET (FET2).
The FET1 is controlled by three ways. The first one is the intermediate voltage via a P corrector. The PWM
duty-cycle changes according to intermediate voltage. The second one is made on the real current value and
a comparator with a current threshold. At switching power on, this current threshold corresponds to 2
amperes to limit the inrush current. When after 10 seconds, the intermediate voltage exceeds 360 V, the
current threshold changes to 50 Amperes. This corresponds to the maximum acceptable current during power
on state. The last way controls the FET1 by hardware. The real current is compared with a reference value.
When the real current exceeds 50 amperes the FET1 is switched off.

6 GENX 1200 W
The GEN’X 1200 W working principle is the same as for the high power model.
The 1200 W model is air cooled by additive fans installed on XPSI and XPSP boards. Therefore no water
connections are needed for XPSI, XPSP and Multiplier assembly. Nevertheless the water fast fittings are left
on the multiplier assembly.

XPSI power components (Power-Mosfet) are cooled by a combined radiator-half pipes system.
XPSI does convert the 230VAC main power to 360 - 420 VDC.
XPSI does manage the inrush current, the working current limitation and the power factor correction.
XPSRD functions are the emulation of a Spellman X-Ray power supply, the interfacing of the analog to
digital signals and vice versa with XPSCD.
XPSCD does manage the kV regulation, the emission current regulation of the X-Ray tube. It is the brain of
the generator.
XPSP power components (Power-IGBT) are cooled by a combined radiator-half pipes system.
The XPSP board converts the intermediate DC voltage (360 V- 440 V) into AC voltage sources, which
supplies current to the filament transformer and the HV transformer.
XPSMD board
Filament transformer
HV transformer
Multiplier box with voltage inversion
The XPSMD board has three main functions: the filament power supply, the HV measurement and the
emission current measurement.
The filament transformer via the XPSM board is used to supply up to 50 W to the X-ray tube filament.
The HV transformer via the multiplier is used to supply up to 4000 W to the X-ray tube anode.
The backplane or motherboard print is a bus supporting 5 slots made of 5 x 32 pins female internal
connectors (J902-J906) and 2 5 x 32 pins female external connectors J901 and J907, of Europe format.
Each board has its specific position in the rack. There are no keys to prevent the connection of a board to the
wrong slot.
Figure 10.3
The main functions controlled by the XPSI board are the mains (230VAC) power factor correction for the
current, the mains current limitation and the X-ray lamps control.
The mains voltage is used via a filter and a relay. When the generator switches on, the relay is energized to
close both contacts. After the rectifier diodes, the FET1 is used to open the circuit if the current is above a
current limit. When the FET1 is open, the current flow through the integrated diode D1of the FET circuit,
due to the inductor L. When the current is below a current limit the FET1 will drive.

The maximum voltage is near 12000 V. The full wave multiplier increases five times this voltage to reach at
maximum - 60000 V. Two dividers are used to monitor the high voltage. The command board uses one of
them to control the HV via the servo loop function accordance with the kV set point. The second is used to
control the first via a subtraction function.
The emission current is measured with the current absorbed by the multiplier. The emission current
measurement allows to indirectly regulating the filament heating current, thus to match with the desired
emission current.

HV servo-loop control
The control board receives the asked HV from instrument master board via XPSRD. The asked HV is
compared with the real HV to generate the HV error, which is used through the PID corrector to PWM duty-
cycle.
The PWM signals control the power stage on XPSP board to supply the right voltage according to the HV
error. The XPSM assembly transformer and multiplier increase this voltage to generate the real HV. The
DSP evaluates the values each 50 us.

When after 10 seconds, the intermediate voltage exceeds 320 V, the
current threshold changes to 40 Amperes. This corresponds to the maximum acceptable current during power
on state. The last way controls the FET1 by hardware. The real current is compared with a reference value.
When the real current exceeds 40 amperes the FET1 is switched off. This circuit allows reacting faster than
the DSP, where its reaction time is related to the sampling period.

BOARD are converted to serial Data and transmitted to XPSCD.
• The analogic Ref signals are converted to serial Data by the ADUC812 built in ADC, to be
transmitted to XPSCD.
• The Monitoring signals are converted from serial Data by the ADUC812 built in DAC to analogic
voltages to be supervised by MASTER PROCESSOR BOARD.

S Power up
8305 Power off, issued by DSP; 400V too low (<350V) POWER SUPPLY FAULT
Too fast X-Ray power supply transition. 400 V voltage drop. May happen when changing X-Ray tube
conditions in terminal mode, in “On Fast mode” and “Operational Mode”.
See trouble shooting section 4 step 6
8306 Power off, issued by DSP; HV too high (>71kV) OVER VOLTAGE
8307 Power off, issued by DSP; Current too high (>35A) POWER SUPPLY FAULT
After a power up retry the current can rise above 35 A.
8308 Mains voltage below 195 VAC (after 20 ms) POWER SUPPLY FAULT
8309 Mains voltage above 253 VAC (after 20 ms) POWER SUPPLY FAULT
