Time Diary Phase 2 Project

The document discusses the results of a time diary study conducted by the author over 3 days. [1] It finds that the author spent about half their time on technology and half not during weekdays for school and work obligations, but technology use increased to 75% of leisure time on weekends. [2] Emotions were most negative on busy school days with no leisure time and positive emotions increased with casual leisure activities. [3] Reflecting on the data, the author believes they could benefit from more consistent leisure time and reducing technology use to support health and human development.

So today, I will discuss a 3-day segment of time that involved two weeks and a weekend day,

where I was tracking my time with others or alone. Then time with technology and time without

technology. Then I also finally followed work and personal leisure time. This paper will be

specifically looking into my describing my overall time use as topic one. Section 2 will discuss

the emotion and stress variables in your Phase 1 data. Finally, in topic 3, I will reflect on how my

leisure connects to my overall health/wellness.

TOPIC 1

What surprised me the most about my time was that, for the most part, everything was about half

and a half during the week with the technology and being by myself. Then during the week, my

time of leisure went down drastically due to classes and school work and as well as my working

a part-time job. So defining my technology use was both weekdays I chose to record it worked

out in the way that during the week, 50% of the time I was on technology and 50% of the time I

wasn't since I have classes and most of the time I have to use my computer to take notes and as

well as I had to do assignments and exams during that week. Then during the weekend, the

technology use jumped to about 75% of the time not using it. I wasn't using technology since I

was relaxing more and wanted more time away from the screen since I'm using technology all

week. So how my leisure time compares to the American average leisure time of 4 hours and 59

minutes. So It's on par with the average since the first day recorded was 4 hours and 30 mins.

Then day 2, I had zero hours of leisure time, and then on day three came up to 7 hours, which

was above the average. The conclusion I came to is the days that I'm the busiest mean I have no

leisure time. The days I have about the standard and maybe a little bit more some days and also
3
for a bit of context on what the definition of leisure means is "freedom provided by the cessation

of activities, especially: time free from work or duties."(Leisure definition & meaning) I differ

from the average American leisure activities because mine are mostly the same activities, and I

don't usually change or branch out and do different things.

TOPIC 2

So my overall emotions were very average since most of the time I wasn't happy, and

some of my feelings occurred the most on the days of being stressed since the day I had no

leisure time. I was studying for a huge exam and doing some class assignments. So to put that on

a scale of how stressed I was, I would be on a high ranking of seven out of ten. My overall

emotional state would be in distress throughout the week. Some trends I noticed while I was

doing "serious leisure," Serious leisure "is the systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or

volunteer activity that participants find so substantial and interesting that, in the typical case,

they launch themselves on a career centered on acquiring and expressing their special skills,

knowledge, and experience".(Stebbins, 1970) So why this relevant is because I noticed my

emotional state became most stressed and anxious during serious leisure then compared to

"casual leisure." Which is defined as "casual leisure can be defined as immediately, intrinsically

rewarding, relatively short-lived pleasurable activity requiring little or no special training to

enjoy it. 1 In broad, colloquial terms, it could serve as the scientific term for "doing what comes

naturally."(Stebbins)Then when I did everyday leisure activities, I saw considerable reductions in

anxiety and stress by just doing simple things like being on my phone or relaxing Since I was

giving myself personal free time. Then when I was most happy was during the periods when I

was doing what I enjoyed, as I mentioned above. Then I was least happy when I was studying for
4
exams and doing homework. Then to answer the final bit, what activities are related to functions

in emotions and stress? Actions that people don't find enjoyable and take time, such as exams,

quizzes, and homework, and make you put the effort in, usually result in stress, and your

emotions become unpleasant. Compared to activities that you enjoy and take little endeavor, such

as going on a walk, running, watching tv, etc. These cause reductions in stress and emotions in a

good way.

TOPIC 3

How leisure supports your health/well-being is "When people engage in leisure activity, they

have lower stress levels, better mood, a lower heart rate, and more psychological engagement —

that means less boredom, which can help avoid unhealthy behaviors."(Leonard, 2015) These

terms mean you are bettering yourself in many beneficial ways that support a good lifestyle.

How leisure distracts you from your health and well-being is, let's say you are participating in

peace too much, you tend to lose focus on bettering yourself, and also, let's say you are going out

with friends regularly and drinking. You hurt your health and well-being of yourself by drinking.

So reflecting on my time use data, I believe some behaviors that I could change are most

definitely giving myself more consistent leisure time since some days I had more, less, and then

none. Then also another behavior I believe I could change is my technology use since It was very

high most days and considering technology isn't the best thing for you to use if you are trying to

improve yourself. It came down to a point where I felt like I was more focused on using

technology than giving myself the proper time for improvement and leisure time. Also, I feel like

it would help my human development since I could learn to a human outside technology since I
5
feel like most people now of days are using technology every waking minute of the day without

a break.

OUTRO

To summarize everything, let's start with the topic where I discussed my time use and my

technology use and showing during the week when I had classes, I was using it the most, and

during the weekend, I wasn't. I also compared my leisure time to the American Average time use

that talked about leisure time. Then topic 2, I discussed my feelings and emotions during my

busiest days when work and exams were stressing me out and the trends I saw about when I was

the least and happiest. Finally topic 3 I went over how leisure improves your health and wellness

and how leisure can degrade your health and wellness. As well as I went over my time use data

and if there were any behaviors I could change to better support my health and human

development.
