Introduction

SWBAT: Find solutions by solving linear and quadratic equations algebraically

Essential Questions: How do we find solutions for our system of algebraic equations?

Do Now:

Solve and factor: x² + 5x + 6 = 0

What we are given

In our practice, we will always be given a quadratic and a linear equation

Examples of quadratic equations: x2-8x-9=0

Why isn't x - 9 = 36 considered
x2=5x+10 quadratic?

Examples of linear equations: y = 3x+10

y - 25 = 6x
Techniques
There are many ways that we can solve for systems
of quadratic and linear equations:

● Substitution
● Elimination
● Graphing

Today we will only be focusing on substitution


Remembering our properties
Quadratic properties are one of the most important rules when it comes to solving for
quadratic equations

remember about like terms

Solving!

You are given y =x2 - x - 6 and y = 2x - 2


Solve for the system and find the solution(s)
First we look at what we are given, both equations are derived from y, so we can make
them equal to each other

x2 - x - 6 = 2x - 2 ; then we combine like terms

2x = x2 -x - 4 ; once we combine like terms, we have to make the new


combined equation equal to zero so we can factor and find our roots

0 = (x - 4)(x + 1) and our roots are x = 4 and x = -1

We don’t stop there, now we take the roots that we have gained and plug
each individual one into the equation. Each x-value that we plug in should
give us its own y-values. This will give us the solutions to our system
