Cleaning Agents or Chemicals


Aside from tools and equipment, housekeeping departments also uses cleaning
chemicals in ensuring cleanliness and sanitation in the hotel property. It helps in removing
offensive odor and avoid spreading of dirt and contaminants. These chemicals may be in form
of liquid, powder or sometimes blocks which are diluted in the right amount. Soft water is used
as hard water cannot dilute detergents properly.

1. Water- the most common cleaning agent


2. Vinegar- though it is not use in majority of the lodging properties, it helps in removing
light stains in guest bathroom.
3. All-purpose cleaners- used to remove all kinds of dirt
4. Class cleaners- used to clean glass surfaces. Others use water and paper as a cheaper
alternative though it may cause glasses some scratches.
5. Bathroom cleaners- chemical that contains phosphoric acid used in cleaning and
disinfecting the bathroom walls, bathtubs, bathroom flooring, tiles, sinks and showers.
6. Disinfectants- help in killing or destroying disease carrying microorganisms.
7. Metal polishers- used to polish metal fixtures
8. Clean air sprays- used to eliminate odors and pungent smell in public areas such as
hallways, powder rooms and reception areas. Though some guest may be allergic to
strong scents, odorless air sprays are normally used in hotels.
9. Degreaser- used in removing grease in guest amenities such as lipstick stains on coffee
cups and glasses. They sometimes combine a certain amount of vinegar and baking soda
to battle grease stains.
10. Floor cleaners and sealers- particularly used in floors that are busy and experience heavy
traffic such as hallways, lobby, corridors, and restaurants among others. Floor cleaners
and sealers prevent wear to the surface, remove stains, dirt and grit and beautify the
floor. This cleaning agents restore the original look and shine of the floors.
11. Detergents- used in cleaning uniforms, linens and other cloths used in the hotel
operations. Detergents are normally harmless for skin and goes well with both hard and
soft water. As this contains various elements, detergents not clean but makes the linen
stronger as well.
12. Bleach- normally used for laundry purposes that helps in maintaining the white linens its
original color.
13. Softener- helps in maintaining the linens and other types of cloth soft.
14. Swimming pool cleaners- it the person responsible in cleaning the pool is not
outsourced, housekeeping department make use of swimming pool cleaners. This
chemical kills the bacterial and algae growth in the water.

Other Chemicals used in housekeeping may include the following:
