NARRATIVE REPORT ON READING IN GRADE-IV PUPILS

I. INTRODUCTION
Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension, fluency and
motivation. Some of the learners are can make meaning from print without being able to identify all the
words and can identify the words without being able to construct much meaning from them. According to
the authors of English expressway Book: reading is fundamental to function in today’s society, it is a vital
skill in finding a good job and is important because it develop one’s mind. It is a magical thinking to believe,
Janet Emig (1983) View point of teaching that “The pupils learned because we teach and one important
skills that needs to be developed in children is reading.

Darumawang Bucana Elementary School was implemented the reading assessment to each pupils.
Every teacher of DBES conducted reading assessment to determine the reading readiness of a learner. The
grade 4 teacher who have 47 learners that studying for school year 2022-2023 conducted Phil.IRI (pretest)
to identify pupils their reading levels. The result was some of them belong to non-readers, frustration,
instructional, independent but most of them belong to instructional which is can read but cannot fully
understand to the meaning of word.

Part of this activity, teachers can easily identify pupils in their particular domain which they failed to
exhibit/perform. The DBES launched the project CNR, giving additional time to those pupils evaluated of
having difficulties in reading 50 minutes at least four days in a week between 8:00am to 8:50am. It started
with identifying letter sound to those pupils who identify as a non-reader, CVC pattern, Dolch sight words,
and fuller method for those who were frustration readers and reading paragraphs with comprehension to
those instructional readers. The materials were charts, flash cards, print-out downloaded materials, and
big books.

Indeed reading of books is a great help to enhance reading proficiency level of the learners.

II. OBJECTIVES
1. To identify the strengths and weaknesses of pupils in reading through the administration of diagnostic
instruments which is Phil.IRI (pretest);
2. To employ direct phonemic awareness training;
3. To establish accuracy and fluency in beginning reading skills;
4. To improve comprehension skills of pupils;
5. To develop their love for reading.
III. THE IMPORTANCE
Reading is important skill for every learner because it is a fundamental skill for the learners to easily learn the
lessons. Through reading, the pupils can know different things, explore different places, and also active their
imagination. As the pupils go to higher grades, they tend to improve their reading skills by developing reading
comprehension and analysis about what they read. But some pupils encounter difficulties in learning to read so the
teacher will tend to help those pupils in need so that they may be able to adapt to their lessons.

IV. PROBLEMS MET

Some of the learners in grade 4 level cannot identify the letter. So as a teacher, I teach letter sound to those
pupils and after identifying the letter sound, I used marungko booklet as their materials in their reading.

V. RECOMMENDATIONS/ SUGGESTIONS
The school should have more ready-made reading materials in every grade level that suit for the
learners reading levels. The parents also cooperate in teaching reading to their children. They should teach
their children in their house during their free time.
