Assistant Director (AD) position is an opportunity to learn an individual
director’s process and whole production process. Duties are quite flexible.
Assistant director usually performs duties normally assigned to the Stage
Manager and Vice Versa. The task will decide based on the abilities for the
assistant, also needs of the show.
Usually, assistant director will act as another set of eyes and ears for sounding
board for the Director at auditions, rehearsals and performances. The assistant
director must keep in mind their status as a student of the production team in
academic theathre. It a must that the assistant director restrict their comments to
the director in order to avoid possibly contradictory messages.

3. Support the Director in realizing the play onstage, which requires an in-depth
understanding of the play, its characters, the setting.
4. Director may also ask Assistant Director to run special rehearsals such as line-
throughs or speed-throughs

1. Type up any rehearsal notes taken by the Director for distribution to the cast and/or
crew
2. Share these notes with the Director who may communicate them to the cast and/or
crew.
3. Insure that appropriate people and/or organizations are thanked in the program for
their contributions to the production.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, as Assistant director position gives us the opportunity to handle event and
learn about the whole production process generally that basically work of the overall
Director. Assistant director is eventually work towards becoming the Director. Generally,
Assistant director in theatre production often takes care of the little things to make the
director’s life easier, such as help to following up on e-mail communications the director
does not have time for. Other than that, assistant director should also be ready to preparing
stage for rehearsals or helping afterward.
