ECE105 Module 3

Music and movement activities are important for children's development. They provide an outlet for children's energy and creativity while also developing motor, social, and academic skills. When children engage in music and movement, all their senses are stimulated as they feel rhythms and movements with their bodies. Regular music and movement can improve children's fitness and build fundamental motor skills. As teachers, it is important to understand children's motor development and create an environment that facilitates music and movement activities.

Music and movement are inside each child. Children responds to music and movement
activities enthusiastically. They provide an outlet for children’s high spirits and creative
energy. Music and movement are integral parts of our lives, means of communication,
help children grow, and lay the foundations for lifelong learning.
Developing Sensory Awareness

Music and movement facilitate learning especially when the activity involves the whole body.
When children explore different aspects of movement, all senses are engaged. The kinesthetic sense
increases as children literally feel the shapes and actions that their bodies are making. Children
respond visually to the images they see as well as the images they create. The auditory sense is
stimulated as children respond to the sounds and music they hear. Children engage in tactile
experiences when they run with bare feet, perform specific floor movements, or swirl a scarf. These
sensory- perceptual experiences help children appreciate the beauty in nature, art, literature, and
everyday living.

Music, Movement and Fitness

Music and movement activities contribute to children's fitness level. Research has shown that
there is a dramatic increase in the number of children who are overweight and a significant decline in
children's overall physical activity (Goran, 2001). The early years are critical not only to the
development of motor skills but also for the development of a disposition for regular physical activity
throughout life (Goodway & Branta, 2003; Payne & Isaacs, 2005).

Preschool children are ready to acquire and practice new motor skills at this stage of rapid
development. New experiences can help them learn motor skills that they will use for a lifetime.
Allowing time each day for music and movement activities can enhance the development of skills
that underlie academic skills (Goodway & Robinson, 2006). Regular music and movement activities
for preschoolers may:

• improve a child's fitness, in both health-related and skill-related areas

• build fundamental motor skills like running, jumping, or skipping
• aid developmental growth
• increase awareness of the body in space
• reinforce a good self-concept through participation in success-oriented tasks
• enhance language skills
• strengthen social skills
• encourage expressive/imitative thought and problem-solving
• instill a love for music and movement

We can engage children in music and movement through listening, singing, moving to
music, playing instruments, and imitating/representing movement.

The group singing and Movement activities are: simple songs with lots of repetition,
songs with finger play, singing games and action songs, songs with funny sounds or silly
lyrics, songs and dance of different cultures, and movement games without music.

Music and movement throughout the Preschool Day: greeting time/morning circle time,
planning time, working time, clean-up time, snack time, circle time, small group time,
transition time.

THE TEACHER’S ROLE IN PROMOTING MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

As teachers, we select music for children’s enjoyment and introduce songs,

action, games, and other music and movement activities. However, our primary role is to
facilitate children’s development by observing them as they respond to music, talking to
them about what they are doing, reacting to and reinforcing their explorations, and asking
open-ended questions. In order to do this, we have to equip ourselves with the following
skills:
1. Ability to describe movement and the elements of music.
2. Ability to identify levels of children’s physical development.
3. Ability to apply approaches in teaching music and movement.
4. Ability to create the environment for music and movement.
5. Ability to respond to children.

Describing Movement and the Elements of Music

Now that you know why movement experiences should be included in the
preschool’s daily activities, you are now ready to design your classroom activities. Before
you start, let us review the nature of movement for you to be able to identify,
differentiate, and describe

Developing Sensory-Perceptual and Motor Awareness
Activities that develop sensory-perceptual and motor awareness help children sharpen the use
of their senses and gain a better understanding of their environment. These activities enable children
to respond appropriately to different objects and conditions around him. For example, when a child
learns the concept of "slippery surfaces and is asked to demonstrate or act out walking on a wet road,
or in an oily floor, that child could transfer that skill to real life situations.

The following are some activities that develop sensory-perceptual and motor awareness in children:
