A. Medical Care & Health Practices


1. Traditional Self-Medication
- Chinese oils/ointments
- Folk healing techniques
• Ventosa
2. Local Healers
- Variety of treatment like use of herbs & roots
➢ Various types of healers
• Midwives
• Masseurs
• Specialists
• Faith healers
• Folk healers - indigenous allies
- In CAR, kankana-ey women are healers (mambunongs)
- For people of Badeo: unseen beings & spirits = diseases

B. Food preservation
1. Salted coupled with drying as preservative
- Salted, smoke and/or dried fish and meat products are staples if filo
diets & cuisine
2. Salt coupled with fermentation as preservative
- Bagoong & patis
3. Fat as a preservative
- Certain way of cooking a dish with fat to preserve it for more than a
week.

C. Farming Practices
1. Swidden farming
- Described as the oldest form of agroforestry practice in Ifugao.
• Apuyan (burning) - done to avoid unwanted burning damages to
adjacent areas
• Latong (fencing) - fences are established
• Mungabut (weeding) - removal of unwanted grasses
2. Seed preservation and storage and crop protection

D. Energy Production
• Charcoal burning
- Charcoal is a domestic fuel for cooking & heating.
- Ham-ak approach generates more and better-quality charcoal but
requires close monitoring.
- Charcoal is the most popular barbecue fuel in the world.

E. Art & Crafts


1. Weaving
Art of weaving in Cordillera (north)

- Piña cloth; produced Antique, popularly used in barong tagalog
- Abaca fiber; came from abaca plant, popular in making a rope,
handbag.
2. Jewelry making
- 2 major product category of fine jewelry:
• Precious metal jewelry (gold & silver)
• Pearls, precious stones & semi-precious stones; precious
gemstones
3. Pottery
- Usually w/ geometric design
- Palayok, kalan
4. Woodcarving
- Carvings of the anitos, saints, statues of Christ & Blessed mother
5. Tattoo
• "batok" - general term for tattoos
- Widespread in CAR w/ different terms
- Inscription of culture in the body, memories, tradition & ethnic
identity
- Tattoos were found on mummies
- Female mambabatoks were rare
- Used to be a painful rite of passage

F. Burial
- Mummifying of Ibalois using salt and herbs & fire
- Might take up to 2 years
- Wooden tomb
