After finishing the course, what knowledge could you learn from the course?
We only know English because it is a common language used by the whole world
until today. As for the origin and historical imprints of this language, probably not many
people know. Through the subject of English development history, I have grasped the
most general and general features of the journey to bring English to this world and also
understood the following issues:
1. Recognize the English why we use to day
According to statistics shared by Babbel Magazine, the English language is spoken
by 20% of the world’s population. Apart from being one of the most popular languages in
the world, English is also the most commonly studied foreign language. Before we learn
how it became a universal language, let’s explore a little about the history of the English
language.

The origin of English dates back to the 5th century, however, the English language
today is very different from how it was spoken then. Modern English, as we know it
today, is a combination of many foreign words that have been included in the English
dictionary.
English is the most useful language in the world, and its “universal language” status
proves that fact.
Learning anything new can be time-consuming. However, irrespective of where you
come from, if you learn English, it will open an array of opportunities for you.
English is the business language, so if you want to start a business, learning English
will make the road ahead a lot easier for you.
It’s always good to learn a new language.
With all that in mind, we can safely say that learning English will add value to your
life.
2. Summarize the difference between old English and Middle English:

existence.
3. Identify the early English origin the development of English
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the English language itself really took
off with the invasion of Britain during the 5th century. Three Germanic tribes, the Jutes,
Saxons and Angles were seeking new lands to conquer and crossed over from the North
Sea. It must be noted that the English language we know and study through various
English language courses today had yet to be created as the inhabitants of Britain spoke
various dialects of the Celtic language.
During the invasion, the native Britons were driven north and west into lands we
now refer to as Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The word England and English originated
from the Old English word Engla-land, literally meaning “the land of the Angles” where
they spoke English.
4. Describe the major periods in the history of English:
The English language history has three main periods: Old English (450-1100 AD),
Middle English (1100-circa 1500 AD) and Modern English (since 1500). Over the
centuries, the English language has been influenced by many other languages.
5. Describe generally the dialect boundaries in England
If you travel from one part of the country to another, you will most often find that
the dialects change gradually as you go. The further you travel, the more different the
dialects will become from the one in the place where you started, but the different
dialects will seem to merge into one another, without any abrupt transitions.
The fact that English has been spoken in England for 1,500 years but in Australia
for only 200 explains why we have a great wealth of regional dialects in England that is
more or less totally lacking in Australia. It is often possible to tell where an English
person comes from to within about 15 miles or less. In Australia, where there has not
been enough time for changes to bring about much regional variation, it is almost
impossible to tell where someone comes from at all, although very small differences are
now beginning to appear
6. Understand the impacts of others languages to English language
There are no doubts about the fact that knowledge of one language has an impact on
learning and understanding of another language. This impact can be both negative (errors
and mistakes made due to the existing differences between the articular languages when
learners wrongly transfer their already acquired language habits on another language
production) and positive (the already acquired language learning skills are transferred;
learning can be facilitated if the languages share some equivalent features)
7. Identify French influences on English
Throughout history, the movement of people has led to the development of the
languages we speak today. The English language is no exception.
While English is the most-learned and most-spoken language in the world today, it
hasn’t always been this way. English has changed a lot through the centuries. Today, the
English language is an amalgamation with influences from languages and cultures around
the world. Some of the languages that have influenced modern English include Greek,
German, Arabic.
However, one of the biggest influences on the English we speak today has been
French. French has influenced English not only in its vocabulary but also in its grammar,
pronunciation, and writing. Here are the ways French has helped transform modern
English.
8. Understand the differences of English in the world
There are many different English speaking countries. Although the language is
essentially the same, there are some aspects of the language that are different in different
places. It would be useful to know the following. The most common English comparison
is between “British English” and “American English”.

Firstly, the pronunciation is different. There are many reasons for this. It could be
that the accent affects the pronunciation or in some cases, the pronunciation can also be
affected by other languages spoken in that area. So you have to listen carefully.
Secondly, the spelling and grammar is different. For example: In British English,
you would say: “colour or programme”. Whereas, in American English you would say:
“color or program”.
Thirdly, there can also be a difference in vocabulary. There are instances where
common objects are called different things. In British English, you would say: “I live in a
flat”. Whereas, in American English you would say: “I live in an apartment”.
9. Understand the development and the role of American English
The use of English in the United States is a result of British colonization of the
Americas. The first wave of English-speaking settlers arrived in North America during
the 17th century, followed by further migrations in the 18th and 19th centuries. During
the 17th century, dialects from many different regions of England existed in every
American colony, allowing a process of extensive dialect mixture and leveling in which
English varieties across the colonies became more homogeneous compared with varieties
in England. English thus predominated in the colonies even by the end of the 17th
century's first massive immigration of non-English speakers from Europe and Africa, and
firsthand descriptions of a fairly uniform American English became common after the
mid-18th century. Since then, American English has developed into some new varieties,
including regional dialects that, in some cases, show minor influences in the last two
centuries from successive waves of immigrant speakers of diverse languages, primarily
European languages.
10. Enable to summarize the history of English
If one endevours to study various English language courses taught today, we would
find almost no immediate similarities between Modern English and Old English. English
grammar has become exceedingly refined (even though smartphone messaging have
made a mockery of the English language itself) where perfect living examples would be
that of the current British Royal Family. This has given many an idea that speaking
proper English is a touch snooty and high-handed. Before you scoff, think about what
you have just read. The basic history and development of a language that literally
spawned from the embers of wars fought between ferocious civilisations. Imagine
everything that our descendants went through, their trials and tribulations, their
willingness to give up everything in order to achieve freedom of speech and expression.
