Introduction and Rationale

Dirt and grime promote the spread of germs, which can also encourage the

spread of communicable diseases. A clean school is crucial to ensure that children and

teachers don’t get sick. If sickness spreads throughout an entire school, it can have

devastating consequences. The sickness can be passed not just to people in the

school, but also to other members of the community.

Creating an environment that is conducive to teaching means ensuring your

lecture halls, classrooms, study, and living areas are all kept clean and tidy. Messy and

dirty classes not only present a poor image, but they can also be distracting and

negatively impact the pride students have in your school. What if the school fails to

provide a clean environment? It means your school fails to provide the basic needs for

the health and success of your students.

Schools not only impart knowledge but also play a significant role in shaping the

personality of an individual. What a student learns in school is not just confined to the

four walls of a classroom, but the whole school environment is a source of knowledge.

Apart from education, a student learns lessons of discipline, honesty, and cleanliness

from school. Therefore, a school needs to maintain a hygienic atmosphere and other

site in the compound.

One way to ensure that your school stays clean is to enlist the help of students.

As a teacher, a clean classroom will make learning a much more pleasant experience

for all. Give your students a special task that they should complete at the end of every
learning day. Whether it’s putting pencils and pens back in their cups or wiping down

the desks, it’s a good way to encourage productive teamwork. You don’t need to ask

students to scrub the floors, but simple tidying up will do. Task each student with one

easy thing they can do daily that will ensure your classroom stays organized.

When it comes down to it, the importance of cleanliness in school is related to

educational success. A clean school ensures a positive and healthy environment for

everyone involved. That’s why the researcher conducts this study to seek the factors

that affect the cleanliness of Bugaan Integrated School. The researchers also aims to

show the awareness of one’s responsibility and to show concern in saving and

protecting the environment.

Literature Review

The first and most important rule of health protection is cleanliness. Cleaning is

defined as the removal of visible contaminants from the environment. With the full

provision of hygiene, individuals are free from pathogenic microorganisms and parasites

and do not infect any infectious disease to others (Kahveci & Demirtaş, 2012).

Together with scent, actual cleanliness is considered to be an ambient condition

which is able to influence perceptions of the service environment. Two qualitative

studies (Whatley et al., 2012) investigated the effect of actual cleanliness, and more

specific visible dirt and stains and presence of litter, on perceived cleanliness of hospital

environments. In addition to the effect of actual cleanliness on the perception of

cleanliness, it appeared that actual cleanliness is able to influence perceptions of

service quality in a hospital environment as well. Service quality (e.g. medical treatment,
catering) was perceived as being poorer when actual cleanliness of the hospital did not

meet expectations of visitors.

However, in the study of Wells and Daunt (2015), the condition of the

environment was linked to perceptions of cleanliness. It appeared that older lecture

rooms were perceived as less clean, while the level of actual cleanliness was similar to

new lecture rooms.

As a result of the research carried out by Kırım and Hırça (2015), it was

concluded that the dissemination of health education in schools, science programs and

the support of teachers in the development of Public Health level will contribute to the

growth of healthy students and thus to the formation of a healthy society while on the

study of Coşkun and Kara (2015) determined that the positive behavioral changes of the

students after the health education given to secondary school students were less than

the increase in knowledge levels.

Based on Ariyani and Wangid (2016) [1] that often we hear slogans in various

places, especially in schools, whose content invites us to keep the environment clean.

But the slogan we do not care about, the slogan function just like a mere decoration

without any contents, but the contents of a slogan is very important for us. Many

slogans invite us to maintain cleanliness, but in fact students are still littering, in addition

to this students also tear the paper in the classroom and when eating a snack in place A

the wrap is also thrown in place A, whereas in those places have been provided trash.
Studies are frequently released on the cleanliness of school cafeterias, as they

can be hot spots for germs and bacteria with hundreds of children using them daily

(Breann Marvin-Loffing, 2016). For many students, the meal they have in the school’s

canteen is the only proper meal they have each day. As such, the cafeteria is one place

in the school that needs to be kept cleaner than any

Moreover, cleanliness is the root of health (Schropp & Kirkevang, 2017). These

words are familiar to us. Often a school has problems about cleanliness. This is caused

by students who throw garbage carelessly. Motivation of the authors raised this theme

because very less once awareness of students to dispose of garbage in trash or waste

banks that have been provided. Although it has been reminded everyday or advised but

the garbage still scattered on the page or in the classroom. Even when examined in a

desk drawer full of paper debris and scraps of food. The giving of punishments and

sanctions has no significant effect.

In addition to this, environmental cleanliness is the cleanliness of residential

areas, workplaces, and surrounding areas (Chan & Liu, 2018) . Housekeeping is done

by wiping the furniture, sweeping and mopping floors, washing cooking utensils and

utensils, cleaning the bathroom and toilet, and taking out the garbage. Environmental

cleanliness begins by maintaining the cleanliness of the yard and cleaning the road in

front of the house from the garbage.

Furthermore, some of schools does not want our school to be dirty, shabby and

full of garbage that makes us less enthusiastic in learning (Harahap, 2018) . Besides,

the garbage that we throw away can also pollute the environment, both in the classroom
and outside the classroom and also can cause our learning atmosphere is not

comfortable.

Lastly, Furnham 2018 stated that the cleanliness of school environment is one

that encourages us to be more eager in the process of teaching and learning activities,

therefore the cleanliness of the school environment must be maintained.
