Sharkman

So, this text is about a man, called Mike Rutzen. He probably has the most exciting and thrilling
job ever. He knows everything about such predators as The Great White Shark and spends lots of time
with them. They are like his real pets: he even plays with them. So, he studies all their secrets and
behaviour and even has, a kind of, special bond with them. That’s why he is called The Sharkman.

He knew nothing about sharks until he started working as a fisherman in the South of Africa. He
even wasn’t a scientist. All he knows about shark – he discovered by himself when he started taking
tourists to see the sharks. Actually, he used to be scared of sharks, but gradually he came to love these
giant fish and developed a very close relationship with them. He also figured out how to behave, swim
and adapt his posture so not to be attacked. In a short period of time he started running his own
cagediving business to share his passion for Great White Sharks.

He provides people with the opportunity to experience an unforgettable underwater meeting with
these creatures. He knows that almost everyone is scared of sharks that is why he aims to show people
that they are not mindless killing machines, as media show them, but creatures with real personalities
that enjoy interacting with people.

The interesting fact is, that they allow Mike to swim alongside them. Moreover, they even let
him hypnotize them. Mike can put this giant creature, that is about 4 metre-long into a state of
immobility for about 15 minutes. During this time, the shark will be resting on Mike’s hand, lying
upside-down.

He spends a majority of his time trying to make people pay more attention to sharks, and try to
protect them, as they are endangered species. He gives lectures about it on regular basis. There are also
some TV documentaries about him, such as “Sharkman”, and episodes in “Natural World” and “A
Living Legend”.
