IN ORDER TO LIVE – FINAL SCRIPT

INT: INSIDE BEDROOM – NIGHT

Curtains are shut. Almost to the point of being pitch-

black. A laptop screen opens up to the front page of
Google search. A CLOSE UP of the google search tap
appears centred in screen when the character types “What
is the news today?”

MUSIC CUE – FORMULA BY LABRINTH

Fast paced, flashing images of different news articles of

political news, climate change etc. mixed in with
scrolling through social media sites like Instagram and
seeing other friend’s posts and stories, as well as
psychological explanation videos on the effect of social
media on young people.

A hidden TICKING sound and HEARTBEAT is heard as the

music level increases.

It all speeds up to the point where is finally stops.

END MUSIC CUE

EXT. ON A BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS - DAY

Immediately we then cut to where we meet our main

character TYLER WALTERS. A 17-year-old college student in
Year 13. With blonde hair, dressed in casual clothes a
typically normal teenager wear. A MEDIUM/CLOSE UP SHOT of
the character is seen as he faces the river and begins to
scream at the top of his lungs, letting out all his
emotions from the overconsumption of the media.

A WIDER MEDIUM SHOT of Tyler is seen and centred in frame

as he turns around and slowly slides down against the
railings of the bridge to sit on the bridge with all the
emotions removed from his face.

This CENTRED FRAMED shot of Tyler starts to ZOOM INTO his

face as he stares straight at the camera with heavy
breathing.

MUSIC CUE – WHEN THE PARTY IS OVER – BILLIE EILISH

INT. IN A DARK STUDIO – DAY

A MATCH CUT from the last shot is immediately seen and is

met with the same CLOSE UP shot of Tyler looking straight
at the camera with a drained expression on his face.

In this dark room, we see coloured lights of purple,

blue, and red, directly reflecting onto his face. This is
representing his emotions and what they are like inside
his head.

AFTER the MATCH CUT, at this point a VOICE OVER BEGINS.

Voice Over Person (V.O.)

The most powerful source of being is the one we fear

the most. Being stuck in a world where we feel to be
not ourselves but the selves only, we can imagine.

EXT. IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIELD – DAY

MUSIC CUE – SOL NOVO – OLIVIA BELLI

BEGIN FLASHBACK - Throughout the V.O, a shot of Tyler is

seen running up to his friends JENNIFER and JAKE.

JENNIFER, a female about 17 with brunette coloured hair

dressed in the clothes normal teenager’s wear.

JAKE, a male also about 17 with black colour hair,

dressed in normal clothes teenager’s wear.

POV OF CAMERA, Tyler is running up to his friends holding

the camera, only being able to see his friends in shot
but as he slows down, he turns around the camera at his
face and stands closer together with his friends to take
a photo with the camera.

You can hear characters softly laughing in the background

having a fun time.

END FLASHBACK.

EXT. ON A WALKWAY NEXT TO RIVER – DAY

BEGIN FLASHBACK – POV of camera held by Jennifer like she

is recording these memories, aiming the camera towards
Tyler and Jake standing by the river with their arms in
the air, biggest smile on their faces, having a great
time and laughing.

Voice Over begins again carrying on from before.

Voice Over Person (V.O)

Even though we know it isn’t who we are, we still
fear to be ourselves. The power of one who may not
exist is the power we fear to be there, every moment
of our lives.

EXT. WALKWAY NEXT TO RIVER – DAY

BEGIN FLASHBACK – During V.O, there is a medium shot of

Tyler as he stops Jennifer and Jake to take a photo of
him by the river. From the camera’s POV, Jennifer holding
the camera towards Tyler as he poses.

Tyler
(Hearing in the background of V.O (FADED AUDIO))
Did you get the shot Jen?

Jennifer
Yeah I got it.

END MUSIC CUE

INT. IN DARK ROOM– DAY

SILENCE. The voice over carries on from before.

MUSIC CUE – CLOSE TO GROUND – CINEMATIC MUSIC

Voice Over Person (V.O)

An endless spiral into this world is the gun point
we have become forced to withhold but dread the
consequences.

Through out this V.O, A WIDE SHOT, at a side angle of

Tyler standing in a dark room with a projector shining
images of news, and scrolling through social media,
shining on his face and body with a dull expression on
his face.

As the V.O sinks in, we have a CLOSE UP SHOT of Tyler’s

face with the images shining directly in front of Tyler
as he stands there.

END MUSIC CUE

Voice Over begins again carrying on from before.

EXT. ON A BRIDGE IN MIDDLE OF WOODS – DAY

We see a CENTRALISED FRAMED, WIDE SHOT of Tyler as he

sits there in the middle of the bridge with a dull,
emotionless look on his face. From the beginning of this
scene, we here this V.O with a background of birds
chirping, wind blowing in the trees. Almost SILENT.

Voice Over Person (V.O)

We are never going to be enough. That never
enoughness is what makes us feel drained from
within. From forces that feel bigger than you.

From the last sentence of the V.O, a FADE IN OF BEATING

MUSIC is heard when we here a continuation of the V.O.

Voice Over Person (V.O)

Even though that fear is daunting. The fear of not
fitting in. Not having a perfect life to showcase,
distracts us from wanting to have a deeper
experience with being alive.

MUSIC CUE – WE ARE INFINITE – THE LIGHTHOUSE AND THE

WHALER

During the Last sentence of the V.O, as every beat goes

by, it is met with a montage FLASHBACK of Tyler and his
friends hanging out, living life through the POV of the
camera being used to record these memories.

EXT. PATH NEXT TO RIVER – DAY

BEGIN FLASHBACK - POV of the camera, a MEDIUM SIDE SHOT

OF Tyler and Jake sitting next to the river with their
feet hanging off the side of the river having the time of
their life. Laughing, Talking.
END FLASHBACK

EXT. IN A FIELD – DAY

BEGIN FLASHBACK - POV of the camera, a MEDIUM SHOT OF

Jennifer and Tyler walking in a field, having a good
time.
END FLASHBACK

EXT. ON A BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS – DAY

BEGIN FLASHBACK - POV of the camera, showing a MEDIUM

SHOT of Jennifer as she throws her arms in the air having

the time of her life, standing on the bridge in the

middle of nowhere, with a big smile on her face.

A POV from the camera is seen, as Tyler tries to get a

picture with Jake and Jennifer as they stand closer,
taking a picture together.

EXT. WALKWAY NEXT TO RIVER – DAY

Only the noises of birds chirping away, water moving away

from the river, we are left to see Tyler sitting by
himself by the river, hanging his feet off the side of
the river.

MEDIUM, WIDE SHOT of Tyler is in frame as he stares at

the river with a pure emotionless expression on his face.
Having everything taken away from him. Tyler’s figure is
out of focus. But the only thing in focus is the
background around him.

As we begin to see this, we here a V.O but from different

Interviews researchers have done in which they explain
the impact of social media.

As we here these comments that touch on the impact on

social media, a CLOSE UP SHOT of Tyler is seen to the
point where we see only his eyes, and the emotions
running along it.

EXT. IN DARK STUDIO – DAY

DIRECTLY after the EXTREME CLOSE UP, it cuts to Tyler in

this familiar dark room we have seen before, with
different colour lights reflecting onto Tyler’s face.

However, this time, the colours, red, orange, pink and

purple have appeared while a CLOSE UP of Tyler is seen as
he scrolls on his phone.

Letting the researchers V.O sink in, we get even closer

to the point of seeing an EXTREME CLOSE UP of Tyler’s
face as he scrolls on social media.

EXT. LONG CORRIDOR – DAY

IMMEDIATELY, we cut to a WIDE SHOT of a silhouette

standing in a long corridor with the end of the corridor
having a bright light.

As we start to get closer to the figure, it reveals Tyler

as he is scrolling on his phone.

MUSIC CUE – EMOTIONAL CINEMATIC UPLIFTING MUSIC

The V.O begins from before as we see these shots.

Voice Over Person (V.O)

As young people, the pressure to act a certain way,
to be a certain way, to feel a certain way,
disconnects us from who we are. We change how we
present ourselves with how we need to present
ourselves only to please the power that we know
isn’t there.

EXT. ALLEYWAY – DAY

During the V.O, we see Tyler sitting in a rough, and dark

alleyway while he is scrolling on his phone. Fully being
consumed by his phone.

EXT. DARK STUDIO – DAY

Along with this, we see FLASHS of CLOSE UPS of Tyler

standing in the familiar dark studio with coloured lights
of Orange, Pink and Blue lights reflecting on his face.

AND FLASHES of FLASHBACKS to where we see Tyler standing

against the wall with the projector shining images
against him.

EXT. ON A BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS – DAY

For the last time, the V.O CONTINUES

Voice Over Person (V.O)

In order to live, all we want is the connection to
the pathway out of this spiral. We will never know
if we will get out.

These FLASHBACKS become faster and faster till we meet

Tyler at the bridge, the aftermath from the first scene
where we see Tyler screaming at the river.

Tyler is trying to catch his breaths as he stares into

the distance.
