2nd MONTHLY EXAMINATION
Mathematics -9
SY 2022-2023
Name: __________________________________________________________________________ Score: ________________________
Grade & Section: _______________________________________________________________ Date: _________________________

A. Write YES if the given inequality is a quadratic inequality and NO if it is not. Show your complete
solution upon identifying each inequality. (2 points each)

1. x +1>0 = ________________
Why: ________________ B. Which of the following values of x will make the
inequality TRUE (5pts)
2
2. 2 x ( x +5 ) <4 = ________________ 2 x −5 x −3<0 ;
Why: ________________ a. x=-1 b. x=0 c. x=1

3. 3 x 2<5 +3x = ________________

Why: ________________

4. x 2+ x+6 ≤ 0 = ________________
Why: ________________

5. x 2 y +3 y >0 = ________________
Why: ________________

SOLVING QUADRATIC INEQUALITIES:

A. Transform the following quadratic inequalities to standard form. Simplify your answer if necessary.
(8pts).
1. 2+ x 2> 2 x
2. 3 x 2−5 x< 8
3. 1 2−3 x 2 ≤ 4 x
4. x 2 ≥ 3 x+ 4

B. Determine the critical numbers for the following quadratic inequalities by following the given steps
below. (10pts)

1. x 2−x−6> 0

2. x 2+ 3 x +2<0
Solve the quadratic inequality x 2−2 x> 8 (12pts)
Solution:
Step 1:
Write one side of the inequality in the form a x 2 + bx + c and the other side zero.

Step 2:
Treat the inequality as a quadratic equation. Solve the equation. The solutions are the critical numbers of
the inequality.

Step 3:
Use the critical numbers to determine the test intervals.

PROPERTIES OF INTEGERS: (15pts)

Step 4:
Choose one test number in each test interval and evaluate the inequality at that value. You may use the
original inequality or factored form of the inequality when evaluating.

Original inequality:
Factored form:
