Concept - Paper - in - Robotics (Final)

This document presents a concept for a student project to build a robot that can automate and speed up the process of recording student attendance. The robot would use a webcam to read QR codes embedded on student ID cards to log who is present without manually writing names. The objectives are to build a functional robot that can accurately record attendance through student IDs in a quicker manner than existing manual methods. The methodology would involve designing, building, and testing a robot with electronic components like sensors, switches, and a light bulb to read QR codes and record the attendance log. This automated process could make recording large amounts of student attendance more convenient and efficient.

CONCEPT PAPER FOR ACADEMIC RESEARCH

WORK IMMERSION 2022-2023

12 - Gates (STEM)

Project Title No. 1:

<Robotics as a Means for Faster Register of Attendance>

I. Brief Background of the Project

Attendance at the school requires a student to put their names on a sheet
containing blank cells. As this would be time-consuming, given that there’s a pile
of students waiting for their turns to fill the sheet with their respective names and
purpose of attending or going to school, a quicker way to record attendance is to
turn to modern technology using robotics as a means to make this possible

II. Defining Robotics

-What is robotics?
According to the google dictionary, “Robotics is a branch of engineering that
involves the conception, design, manufacture and operation of robots”.

-The Anatomy of Robots

As Anatomy deals with body structures, Robot Anatomy in turn deals with the
components used to build the structure and outline of the robot itself.

The function of the robot is to read a QR Code embedded in a card that analyzes it
and records the user which it then saves as part of an attendance or record.

The robot consists of 5 primary components:

SPST Toggle Switch, Omni Photo Control Switch, Computer Webcam, Incandescent
Lightbulb (Yellow), and the E12 Candelabra Socket.

The components and their functions used in this project are as follows:
 SPST Toggle Switch – this is a switch that has a binary function that only
takes 2 outputs—On or Off / 1 or 0. This switch is used to turn on and turn off
the robot.
 Omni Photo Control Switch – this electronic device detects light and
darkness, which converts it into an electrical signal that results to an output.
In this project, this device is used to scan the back of the QR Code (which
overs it), it is connected to the LED, if it detects the back of a QR Code it will
then result to the LED lighting up.
 Computer Webcam – this device is used to read the QR code of the user. It
saves the input by creating an output that saves the log of the user.
 Incandescent LightBulb (Yellow) – this is used to indicate that the code
was read by the Webcam.
 E12 Candelabra Socket – this allows the lightbulb to be wired and
connected to both the SPST Toggle Switch and the Omni Photo Control
Switch, which allows it to read the input of the sensor, if the sensor is blocked
by the device used to show the QR Code (in a card), it will then light up the
LED and allow the user to successfully enter the record.

-Uses of Robots in Different Fields

There are many different uses of robots. It depends on a robots functions if it can
be used in a certain field. For example, in Manufacturing, according to JR
Automation (n.d.), “Automation has become synonymous with using robotics and
machines to reduce or replace work traditionally done by employees.”, this implies
that robotics help in making work easier and is a more convenient way to do a task.

This project can allow certain personnels to honestly record their attendance
without having to manually write down their name, date, and etc.

III. Objectives of the Project

This device allows for a quicker and efficient way of accurately recording the
attendance of students, workers, different personnels, and etc.

The following are the objectives of the project

>Be able to make a fully functional robot
>Recording/Checking of attendance through student IDs should be fulfilled by the
said robot
>Make roll calls more convenient and quicker

IV. Significance of the project

This research will focus on formulating and constructing a structure design of
a robot in which the objective can be done successfully. It can be easier to check the
number of student attendees in a class with the use of a machine which has the purpose of
counting all the students who entered the class using their unique QR codes embedded in
their school IDs.

V. Methodology
The study is expected to use building and creating a Robot to accomplish the
purpose of the project to be done. This involves listing and finding the materials
needed, checking the amount of resources to be used, and the actual engineering of
the robot design.

The students built a chasis board that contains the electronic components of the
project which acts as the structure. After, the students then proceeded to solder and
connect the needed wires for each of the electrical component needed for the project.
This is the work that was involved in creating the project:
 Carpenting the board for the project.
 Soldering of the wires in each electrical component involved.
 Attachment of each electrical component in their respective position in the
board.
 Proper connections of each electrical component to the right sockets, slots, and
pins.
 Setup of the QR Code and its content.
 Tests that were done to check the overall output of the project.
