Difference Between CAD and BIM Platforms

CAD is used for mechanical and electrical design through 2D drawings and 3D models, while BIM provides a digital representation of a complete building including physical and functional characteristics. BIM allows analysis and visualization of design decisions before construction through its use of digital tools and management of building information models. Key differences are that CAD focuses on individual components through lines and shapes while BIM uses existing building elements that can be combined and analyzed as an entire building model.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

CAD AND BIM PLATFORM

ALUKO SAMUEL PELUMI

Project by: - -

To start my presentation I will first explain the meaning
of both topic… CAD this is also known as Computer-aided
design, it is used for design and documentation using
computer technology… CAD files is used by designing
engineers for projects requiring multiple parts and
components to fit precisely with a large assembly of other
Topic project .

explanation BIM mean building information modelling… BIM are

computers files which involve the building information
models, this involve the generation and management of
digital tools which represents physical and functional
characteristics of place… according to finding, BIM was
developed in the 1970’s but was later verified early in the
2000s
THIS IS WHAT BIM PROJECT LOOK LIKE

People who use BIM are architects engineer and contractor who work together to design and build a commercial building utilizing the
same database and computer model, with the use of BIM team are able to analyze and visualize design decisions even before they
start building because with BIM the building is already build visually this make it easy for team to see through if this is what they
want and if there is anything they need to do…

With BIM we can use functions like wall, roof, window also HVAC and electrical tools. BIM make it easy to see through project before
it come to real life…
THIS IS WHAT A CAD PROJECT LOOK LIKE

CAD user can efficiently product 2D drawings and 3D models of parts and assemblies to be manufactured from their desire's materials. the use
of 3D CAD software has been around for the past 30 years and plus… with this amount of time of this software around, there is so much
different and transformed that has occurred… CAD allows more complex products to be design by design engineer and this help to
manufactured faster than ever in the history of engineering..

People that use CAD are the manufacturers and engineers who are adapting their processes to meet strict aerospace and automotive
manufacturing guidelines and improve the time to market new made products. as time pass CAD has become a strategic imperative
throughout the industrial market to create more unique and high quality product , CAD are used in a lot of industries around the world starting
from the civil engineering, to the plant design and the manufacturing,

There are few format of CAD this are known as DXF and AutoCAD DWG, this are used on the 2D drawing, there are also format which are used
on the 3D this format are Solid-work, Creo and also host standard formats which are IGES, SAT and STEP… there are more formats
CAD are basically used to design mechanical and electrical assemblies in sector like industrial
manufacturing civil engineering and plant design, BIM is use in design of commercial building for
example school, houses, airport and so on.

BIM provide a digital representation of the real facility not just roof window and wall, BIM also
provide function like electric and pumping system.

With BIM we create system that can be visual and analyze digitally, it also show their function, BUT
with CAD files we can’t do this,

THE REAL DIFFERENT CAD is widely used from the building of cars to airplane, fashion like clothing and jewelries, interior
design, space jet and so on..
BETWEEN BIM AND The benefit of CAD includes low product development cost, it improves product quality and increase
CAD faster development, CAD give builder accuracy, that way errors are reduce. both CAD and BIM run on
REVIT software. But they both have different function and design preview…

AUTOCAD is basically use for CAD project. It is introduced by AUTODESK,

BIM include every information of component that goes into a project, BIM will tell you about the
product’s functional data. the characteristics which will make the designer to manipulate object to
his or her satisfaction, BIM. Use 3D model. and its function is based on project that provide AEC
professionals information which also include the tools to efficiently create, make plan and deliver a
good design… this include the construct and manage of buildings and structure, getting the detailed
data make it easy for designer to identify clash and other errors in the project..

The information provides by BIM make it possible for user to manipulate tools to product building,
and plan, for example the use for schedule. this tool makes it easy to label any component in the
project and involve all the information about each component…

Such data involve the numbers area measure and the sizes. most used software for BIM include
AUTODESK REVIT, AUTODESK NAVISWORKS, AUTODESK BIM 360, SKETCHUP, ARCHICAD AND
VECTORWORKS ARCHITECT,
BIM IN BUILDING
DEPARTMENT
BIM consist of actual modelling element, Bim provide already made element that can be
add together to create a project, this element can be join or separate at any time…

This Element include element like :

WALL
ROOF
COLUMN
WINDOW
DOOR
CEILING
RAMP,
STAIRS and so on..

BIM also provide tools like component to create new element needed in the project
CAD IN THE BUILDING
DEPARTMENT

CAD focus on creating line to design building meanwhile BIM focus on

creating a building model, this can be done by generating the drawing from
the model, This can be time consuming because each part of the project
have to be draw and shape out before the 2D or 3D version can be created

BIM 3D version

BIM can also be used to create 3D designs , this also involve underground
work which cannot be see on the surface… also BIM offer a chance for
many designers to work together using collaborative tools… 3D project
make the project more real and it easy to see if there is problems that need
to be tackle before completing the project

CAD 3D AFTER
DRAWING LINES

CAD offers developers to communicate about the logistics and dimension of a design
project and plan on making improvement together… CAD platform allow designers to
use raw ideals and turn it into something amazing. like three-dimensional design… this
simply mean that the project have to be draw out first, after the designer is sure that the
design is right then the 3D version of the project can be create.. this is good to make
correction from the early stage of creating the project

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF BIM AND CAD
Advantages of CAD is that CAD package create documentation for the user. anything CAD that is used to design has a paper trail attached to it.
which mean there is information always to look into in case there is a confusion at any point of time…

Advantage of BIM is the designer have to use schedule to tag down the information about each created object… resource tracking is also a key
component of BIM model, it easy to figure out how much resource is needed at a time… this improve the creation and efficiency of construction

Disadvantage of BIM is that many designers are yet to get use to BIM. this way they run into so many errors; the good part is as time
goes BIM is easy to get used to. once the basic tools are known

Disadvantage of CAD is that its user complacent. so many tools for the developer to use. this can lead to confusion if the user is new. and also
lead to designs looking just like other designs… with CAD it easy to put together all design without thinking about any real world problem…
but with BIM it easy to locate any form of error because a real world visual object is use throughout the design…

CONCLUSION
My conclusion is that CAD and BIM are two different platform with both similarity and differences … BIM
contain already made element which make it easy to put together to produce a design meanwhile CAD
deal with the process of creating elements from nothing by using lines to shape out the design then
produce the 3D element which is later use in the project .
This in my understanding.
