SOP - University of Texas at Austin

The applicant is applying for a master's degree in computer science at The University of Texas at Austin. They have always had an interest in science and technology and became fascinated with information retrieval and machine learning after developing a search engine using an algorithm they presented at an IEEE conference. For their undergraduate final year project, they used computer vision and deep learning techniques to help forecast a football player's next move. They have since gained industry experience working as a software engineer and are seeking to further their education at UT Austin due to its strong data science and AI programs and prominent faculty in those fields.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Course- Computer Science

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be,” the saying goes. I
have always strongly believed in this principle. Perseverance, diligence, and consistency have
been the three primary guiding factors in both my professional and personal endeavors. I am
applying for the master's degree in computer science because of my strong desire to learn
about cutting- edge technologies through hands-on experience. I would like to enroll in the
course at your reputable university so that I may stay current with developments in the field
and prepare myself for the demanding standards of the industry.
Throughout my schooling and college career, I have always had a special interest in the
sciences, especially physics and mathematics. I’ve consistently had a rapid learning curve. I first
became interested in computers when I started using them in my classroom demos and
presentations to learn about technology locally and globally. I was amazed by how quickly a
search engine software fills its database with facts pertinent to a user search query. Since that
time, information retrieval has held my attention in a profound way. At Ramaiah Institute of
Technology, I decided to pursue my passion for computer science engineering as part of my
bachelor's degree.
When I pursued a course in information retrieval, that made my first excursion into research by
developing a search engine based on the Cover Density Ranking Algorithm, which improves
upon Vector Density Ranking and was presented at the IEEE Conference in 2021. Because of my
interest in information retrieval, I investigated the automation aspect of it more, and as a
result, I discovered a machine learning framework that is appropriate for information retrieval
systems. I was astonished by the extent to which real-time data analysis using machine learning
(ML) and deep learning (DL) frameworks might be used to find patterns and correlations in the
data for real- time applications. My path was therefore opened to investigate more ML and DL
frameworks through a variety of research articles and projects. I had simultaneously
undertaken several practical projects and certification courses to broaden my understanding of
the core concepts and hone my python programming skills.
In my third year, I started a project using an ML framework with two other students as my
teammates. Our study aimed to develop a hybrid decision support system employing machine
learning frameworks to increase crop productivity. To provide an estimate of crop productivity
over a seasonal crop dataset, we developed a hybrid system of ARIMA and LSTM algorithms. In
the end, we were successful because we got superior simulation results. The exploration of
deep learning technology was our next goal. This inspired us to work on our final year project,
the creation of a trustworthy algorithm to help forecast a football player's next move. Our
project comprised several different subsystems and was totally multidisciplinary. To improve
the resolution of a picture, we employed the Enhanced Deep Super-Resolution Network (EDSR),
a Computer Vision Technique, along with DenseNet161 with SGD optimizer and 30 simulated
epochs.
After graduating, I was hired as a Software Engineer1 by Lam Research, a major player in the
semiconductor industry. I have experience working on large product groups, which has helped
me gain a comprehensive understanding of various tool architectures and domains. I've been
in this sector for more than 1.5 years, and throughout that time I've worked on significant
projects including the use of Java, C#, and web stack applications on both the front end and
back end, including angular, NodeJS, Java script, and spring boot. I participated in the company's
hackathon by developing a Virtual Lab Assistant using computer vision technology, which won
first place out of 20 technical submissions. A renowned R&D facility in Lam, India, is currently
using the design.
I chose to pursue my graduate studies in the United States because I am convinced that the
country offers the academic and research opportunities, I need to develop a career that is in
line with my passions. Furthermore, the cultural diversity of the United States contributes to a
richer overall campus life. In addition, the US is at the forefront of several cutting-edge
technology.
More importantly, I chose The University of Texas at Austin for its pretty strong Data Science
track, it’s extremely active research in Artificial Intelligence and ML and its proximity to many
technology giants. Moreover, I am deeply inspired by the Professors’ work, especially Professor
Adam Klivans’s work in List-Decodable Linear Regression and Professor Kristen Grauman’s
contributions in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR). Also, the University conducts
Intern Fairs which are widely sought after by students.

As a student at your university, I am confident that my enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills will
advance quickly and move me one step closer to my objective of building a promising
professional career. There are clear benefits to learning from professors who are well-known
in their fields and who have written a lot of publications. I am certain that the University of
Texas at Austin would be the ideal setting for me to further my education in the subject I am
most interested in. I sincerely believe that I can contribute to the university's research. Being a
member of your prestigious university would be an honor.

Sincerely,
Gayathri Sai Yesaswi Idupulapati
