Q4-Science-7-Week7-8 - 1

This document provides a lesson plan on eclipses for 7th grade science. It explains that eclipses occur when one heavenly body passes through the shadow of another. There are two types of eclipses: solar eclipses, which occur when the moon passes between the earth and sun, and lunar eclipses, which occur when the earth passes between the sun and moon. The lesson includes learning tasks to explain shadows, the differences between solar and lunar eclipses, and to model eclipses using craft materials. It assesses student understanding through multiple choice questions about the causes and occurrences of eclipses.

COMPETENCIES (MELCs)
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT The occurrence of Eclipses
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: Day 1)
In this lesson you will learn more about eclipses. An eclipse takes place when one heavenly body such as a moon or planet
moves into the shadow of another heavenly body. There are two types of eclipses on Earth: an eclipse of the moon and an
eclipse of the sun.

Learning Task 1
“Shadow Play” (You will make your own shadow). These pictures show the different shadows. You can follow the pictures
below or you can make you own shadows.

Figure 1 "hand shadow" by zen is licensed with CC BY-NC-SA 2.0. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/

Answer the following questions: Write your answer on another sheet of paper.
1. What causes a shadow to appear?_________________________________.
2. Are shadows present in space? Yes or No; Why? ___________.

D. Development (Time Frame: Day 2)

Shadows are made by blocking light. Light rays travel from a source in straight lines. If an opaque (solid) object gets in the
way, it stops light rays from traveling through it. This results in an area of darkness appearing behind the object. This causes
eclipse.

There are two types of eclipses:

1. Solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the earth. The moon blocks the light rays
and casts a shadow on Earth.
2. Lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, the earth and the moon are in a straight line. The earth casts a shadow on the
surface of the moon.

A solar eclipse is called total solar eclipse if the Sun appears totally dark ,and If only part of the Sun appears dark, it is called
partial eclipse. During a solar eclipse some people on Earth will see a total eclipse, in another area they will see a partial
eclipse. From some area, they will not notice any difference in the appearance of the Sun. Only the people within the small
area covered by the center of the Moon’s shadow will see a total eclipse.

During an eclipse, two shadows are cast, the umbra and penumbra. The umbra is the dark center portion of a shadow. The
umbra is the portion of the Moon's shadow where the Moon completely covers the sun. Moon's umbra causes total solar
eclipses. Penumbra is the lighter outer part of the shadow. This causes partial eclipse.Solar eclipse occurs on a new moon
phase of the month, this is because the moon’s orbit is tilted and does not always fall in a straight line with the earth and the
sun.

A total solar eclipse can last for several hours and totality can range from a few seconds to 7.5 minutes. The longest total
solar eclipse of the 21st century took place on July 22, 2009, when totality lasted 6 minutes and 39 seconds!
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
During lunar eclipse, the Moon is in the Earth’s shadow but the Moon does not appear completely dark. It glows a dim
orange or red color. This happens because some light reaches the Moon indirectly. This light bounces off the gases that
surrounds the Earth and then hits the Moon. Lunar eclipse occurs on a full moon but not at every full moon phase of the
month. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the Moon enters Earth's umbra, while a total lunar eclipse occurs
when the entire Moon enters the planet's umbra.

Learning Task 2
This diagram shows the pathway of Lunar and Solar eclipse.

Using the diagrams above, answer the following questions. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

1. What causes eclipse to happen? ___________________________

2. When does a solar eclipse occur? __________________________
3. When does a lunar eclipse occur? __________________________
4. What is the lighter shadow cast during an eclipse called? ________________________
5. What do you call the dark shadow cast by the earth on the moon?______________________

E. Engagement (Time Frame: Day 3)

Learning Task 3.
Identify which illustrate a Solar eclipse and a Lunar eclipse. Label each element of the eclipse. Write your answer in a
separate sheet of pad paper.

IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Learning Task 4
“MY DIY SOLAR AND LUNAR ECLIPSE”
Using what you have learned, create models to illustrate Solar and Lunar eclipse by using a flashlight, small ball and big ball.
Draw how you will set these up.

Learning Task 5.
Put the number for each statement into the correct location in the Venn Diagram. Copy and answer, write your answer in a
separate sheet of paper.
1. The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun.
2. The Sun, Earth, and Moon line up.
3. The view of the Sun is blocked from Earth. Solar eclipse Lunar eclipse
4. The Moon turns dark red.
5. The Sun looks black.
6. It happens only during a new moon.
7. It is caused by the Moon’s orbit around Earth.
8. It happens only during a full moon.
9. The Earth is between Sun and Moon.
10. The Moon is in Earth’s shadow.

A. Assimilation (Time Frame: Day 4)

Fill in the blanks by identifying the appropriate word for each blank. Write the answers on a separate sheet of paper.
1. ___________ occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the earth. The moon blocks the light rays
and casts a shadow on earth.
2. __________ occurs when the sun, the earth and the moon are in a straight line.
3. __________ occurs on a new moon phase of the month.
4. ___________is an astronomical event. It is when one object in the sky moves into the shadow of another such object.
5. Eclipses are considered total in the area where the _________falls and partial in the area where the __________ falls.
