ACTIVITY 4: REACTION PAPER

Sound and Fury

Name: Karla S. Mascarinas Yr/Section: BSN 3-B

A sound and fury by Josh Aronson (Cornell University Press: 1 st edition, January, 2000). Main
cast of character, Heather the curious girl with hearing loss or deaf. Peter, the father of heather
who is also deaf. Nita, mother of heather also have problem with hearing or a deaf. Peter, the deaf
son of Chris. Mari and Chris are the parents of Peter and the grandmother of Heather and Peter.

The Artinian family, which includes three generations of deaf people, is primarily focused on
two brothers: Chris Artinian, who has normal hearing, and Peter Artinian, who is deaf. Chris and
Mari Artinian discover that one of their newborn twins is deaf despite possessing normal hearing in
both ears. They begin looking into the benefits and disadvantages of the cochlear implant. Peter
and Nita's oldest child, Heather, begins to request an implant at the exact same time. The brothers
get into a heated discussion about the value of deafness, the best type of education for their kids,
and the controversy surrounding cochlear implants for young children with grandparents on both
sides. Nita and Peter are worried that they'll lose a child to the hearing world, as well as her
potential rejection of Deaf culture. They chose to leave the implant behind and move to Maryland
as they were happy with it. Chris and Mari decided to have Peter, their infant, undergo cochlear
implant surgery. Heather's parents are worried that their child will be taken away from being who
she is and forget the hearing world, while Chris and Mari decided to have Peter, their infant,
undergo cochlear implant surgery since they decided to give their child hearing freedom. Viewers
are taken into the little-known world of the deaf while learning about a traumatic family dispute
over the hotly debated cochlear implant. Some members of the family applaud the implant as a
long overdue cure for deafness, others are concerned that it will destroy their language and way of
life. As a result, there might be conflict between the two families regarding what will happen to
their kids.

The topic at hand is the benefits and drawbacks of having a cochlear implant for a child. The
problems facing their family are made more complicated by the fact that both parents have
different expectations for the child. In this movie, both parents come to the conclusion that
acquiring an implant is best for their child's health and ability to hear the outside world. The
relevance it to teleology this refers to a purpose, parents wanted to give their child the freedom to
hear and have a normal life. My insight into this is that Heather must have the cochlea implant.
Heather is a curious girl who wants to hear even the humming of the bird every morning in the
world. She loves communicating with people; she's different and a bright girl. She didn't want to
just be deaf; she wanted to be more. Furthermore, it is good to have cochlea implantation because
it can prevent discrimination from other people who are narrow-minded. In the case of her mother
and father side, they don't need to worry about Heather having the implant. Heather just wanted
to hear not to reject or forget what she is.
