 A conjunction is a word that joins two or more
words, phrases, or clauses. A conjunction is also a
type of connective word that is used in order to
link two parts of a sentence together.

Coordinating Conjunctions
 Coordinating conjunctions are used to link together the two parts of a sentence that are
both important.
 There are seven coordinating conjunctions that are commonly used. We can use the
acronym of them as FANBOYS to make it easy to remember.
F=For (talks about a purpose or a reason for something)
Ex: For she eats everything immediately, she must be very hungry
A=And (used as a connector to add somethings, new ideas, opinion or combine phrases,
clauses, or sentences)
Ex: I take milk and sugar in my tea.
I like milk, and I like coffee.
N=Nor (used in the two negative meanings, or two non-contrasting negative items)
Ex: He doesn’t eat cake, nor does he eat chocolate.
B=But (used to connect ideas or things that are contrast)
Ex: I like coffee, but my sister likes milk tea.
I want to study at RUPP, but my friend wants to study at ITC.
O=Or (show about the choices, two or more possibilities, or alternatives)
Ex: Would you prefer tea or coffee?
You can either choose tea or coffee.
Are you Mouyleng or Malin?
Y=Yet (contrast, despite something=nevertheless, but, still)
Ex: He is 20 years old, yet he still likes eating sugar.
I am so sleepy, yet I still continue my work.
I walk slowly, yet I still continue walking.
S=So (for showing consequence of something)
Ex: I am very tired, so I sleep for the whole day.
They think it is easy, so they do it quickly without proofreading.
He is very bored, so he goes to sea.
Subordinating Conjunctions

 Subordinating conjunction makes the dependent clauses, so an independent clause is needed as


well.
There are some examples of subordinating conjunctions such as: Although, because, since, when,
while, if, until, how, after.... Examples:
Although my mom wake me up, I still get up late.
What are dependent
I go to school late because I get up late. clause and
independent clause?
I have become a dancer since I was young.
I woke up when my baby cried.
I arrived home while my mother was taking a shower. Dependent clause is a clause that cannot stand
alone.
If I tell you, you will not understand. Independent can stand alone.

I don’t know how you can go there.


Call me after you arrive at the station.
Correlative Conjunctions

Correlative Conjunctions link parts of a sentence that go together. They are :


as.......as
both......and
either........or
not only.........but also
Examples: I both go to Kampot and Koh Kong. (wrong)
I go to both Kampot and Koh Kong.
I both go to Kampot and go to Koh Kong.
Examples: Sokha loves not only Khmer food, but also loves Thai food. (wrong)
Sokha not only loves Khmer food, but also loves Thai food.
Sokha loves not only Khmer food, but also Thai food.
Examples: I want either cake or chocolate.
You will get both cake and chocolate.
You can eat as much as you want.
As you will see, it is quite easy.
I am going to teach you how to do this, just as my daddy taught me.
As well as swimming, John enjoys cycling.
As soon as he comes, I will give him the message.
