ANSWER TO QUESTIONS:
 SELF-TEST
Check your understanding by answering these questions.
1. The formula which gives the total resistance of series connected resistors is RT =
R1 + R2 + R3 + ··· .
2. The formula which gives the relationship between the applied voltage V, the
current I, and the resistance R of a closed circuit is V = I × R .
3. To design a circuit which is powered by a battery of V volts which draws I
amperes, it is necessary to find resistance . This is done by substituting V and I
in the formula R = V/I .
4. To design a circuit which draws I amperes through a resistance of R ohms, it is
necessary to find voltage V across R . This is done by substituting I and R in the
formula V = I × R .
5. The final step in the design of a circuit, after the parameters have been
determined, is to connect the circuit and measure the quantities involved.

 QUESTIONS
1. Refer to Table 13-1. Compare the R, required values with the R, measured values.
If they are not the same, explain why.
- The resistance of required values and the resistance of measured values
are exactly the same, because we use the resistors in the material
required to get the total color-coded resistance value RT.
2. Three 1/2-W resistors 1000 Ω, 5000 Ω and 10 000 Ω with tolerance band color-
coded gold are connected in series. What is the range of their total resistance, as
measured with a meter whose error is 0%, that is, whose accuracy is 100 percent?
- We can get the range of RT if we get the sum of the combination of
resistance (RT = R1 + R2 + R3 + ··· ) and by substituting the value into
the formula we get 16k Ohms in total.

- ( RT = 1000 Ω + 5000 Ω + 10000 Ω)

( RT = 16000 Ω)

3. Refer to Table 13-2. Compare the required and measured values of I. Explain any
difference between each set of values.
- There is no difference between the required and measured values of the
current. As you can see in the table, they are identical to each other
because we use the same formula to get the measured values.

4. Consider the measured values of current I. in Table 13-2. for each value of
applied voltage. Indicate if the R, of the selected resistors is equal to, less than or
greater than the design value, and explain why you think so.
- Each combination I used were from the materials required and I used
some formulas to get the current. And to my surprise, for each value of
voltage, the resistance of the selected resistors is equal to the design
value.

5. Refer to Table 13-3. Compare the current I measured with the design requirement
of 4 mA, for every combination listed in the table. Explain any differences
between the two current values for each combination.
- For every combination I used in this experiment, I get a value of 0.004
amperes or equivalent to 4 milliamperes, thus the measured vale and the
design requirement for 4 mA are equal. There is no difference between
the two current values.
CONCLUSION:

In this laboratory experiment, we learn to design a series circuit which will meet
specified resistance, as well as the voltage and current requirements. Also, to design a series
circuit which will meet specified current and resistance requirements.

With the help of this experiment, we experience this first-hand, on how to construct a
simple circuit and check, by measurement, the design specifications.
