Did you know that the Philippines has the second-most sedentary youth population in
the world next to South Korea? That is according to a World Health Organization 2019 study
that polled 1.5 million teenagers in 146 nations. According to Sassos (2021), a sedentary
lifestyle is a lifestyle in which the individual is physically inactive and engages in little or no
physical movement or exercise. A sedentary person spends much of the day sitting or lying
down while doing something like socializing, watching TV, playing video games, reading, or
using a mobile phone or computer. If sedentism persist, it may contribute to poor health
quality, diseases, and many preventable causes of death (Park et al., 2020). In order to
reversed these effects, exercise shoule be encourage, and the best form of exercise is sports.
This is the reason on why Sportshub Club is established. SportsHub Club is a student
organization and its mission is to promote sports participation among students and realized its
benefits. Since there are countless benefits of sports, every students of General Mariano
Alvarez Technical Highschool (GMATHS) should join the GMATHS’ SportsHub Club
because participating in sports foster students’ personal development; enhance both physical
and mental wellbeing; and aids the development of students interpersonal skills.
Participating in sports, according to critics, take time away from the classroom and
divert students’ attention away from their studies. They proceed to say that students cannot
achieve excellence and satisfaction in both sports and education. A study’s findings indicate
that student-athletes are unable to achieve comparable academic success in the subject
English as non-student-athletes at comprehensive schools (Niehues et al., 2022). In addition
to that study, although student-athletes at sports schools receive significantly more support in
academics and athletics, according to Thompson et al. (2022), student-athletes tend to
struggle to achieve higher academic success than non-student-athletes for skipping school
due to injury, investing more time in their sports, and missing school activities. On the other
hand, numerous study found that participating in sports lead to better academic performance.
For example, a study found that there is a link between sports participation and academic
The first reason on why League of Athletes organization should be established and
actualized because engaging in sports foster personal development for students. According to
Ghildiyal (2015) sports benefit an individual in ways other than the physical. It develops and
teaches strategic thinking, analytical thinking, leadership skills, goal setting, and risk taking
(Ghildiyal, 2015). Ghildiyal (2015) also quoted that “Sports in psychology and life helps
develop team spirit, leadership skills, fairplay, never give up attitude and focus. It is a great
leveller, helps us know our strengths and abilities, understand process and result, the value of
planning, earnestness and sincerity, observation and analysis”. Engaging in sport is not only
fun but also a great way to develop one’s personality.
Secondly, not only engaging in sport is good for students’ physical health but also for
their mental health. Moderately strong evidence revealed that running and football both
enhance cardiovascular health and function while at rest, and football lowers body fat.
Running also improves metabolic fitness, adiposity, and postural balance, and football
enhances metabolic fitness, muscular performance, postural balance, and cardiac function
(Oja et al., 2015). Jiang et al. (2020) conducted a survey and demonstrated that anxiety,
depression, and suicidal thoughts were significantly more prevalent in people who engaged in
sedentary behavior. In order to reverse this effect, sports participation also include
psychological benefits for students. According to Easterlin et al. (2020), team sports
participation during adolescence was significantly associated with better adult mental health
Overall, it is apparent that active participation in sports is a great way to refrain from
engaging on sedentary lifestyle behaviors as well as it helps students develop their
personalities, their physical and mental health, and their interpersonal skills. This is why
SportsHub Club believes in the active participation of students in sports. Proper sleep,
nuteition and proper pre-workout and post-workout routine is highly encouraged to prevent
injuries aand aids recovery. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to join and become a
member SportsHub Club student organization and be a student champion.
