System Design Process For All Ports / Terminals
• Many different design iterations may become possible as requirements and information become available.
• A combination of actual site surveys, design, planning, should be part of the project timeline.
• System design adjustments will be needed if the RF simulation test does not meet coverage expectations.

Network Layout (Fluidity (Mobility) Network)
All mobile units in a terminal are called ‘Vehicles’ and make up the Mobility network.
• STS Cranes, reach stackers, terminal tractors, straddle carriers, RTGs, and more.
Their radio hardware is called the ‘On-board network system’. A mobility network radio can:
• Have hardware redundancy and fast failover.
• Be equipped with single or dual radios.
• Be equipped with omnidirectional or unidirectional antennas, depending on operational area, and the type
of application running on the vehicle.

Network Layout (Mobility Network)
A mobility network radio may need coverage at any point in the terminal, depending on where Cisco
Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul base stations are located.

A mobility network radio may need to accommodate multiple data streams at the same time (for
example, TOS, video, VoIP, PLC and PROFINET).

(Comparison Of Single-antenna And Dual-antenna Designs)
Access network stations use one of two
configurations:
• The single-radio with one antenna design offers
V V
long-range coverage in one direction and is H H H
easy to install. V

• The single-radio with dual antenna design offers

coverage in two directions but divides the overall
transmission power of the radio between the two
antennas.
• This design is somewhat more physically
complicated and needs more antenna
H V
cabling.

(Comparison Of Single-antenna And Dual-antenna Designs)
Mobility network stations use one of two
configurations:
• The single-radio with one antenna Single radio with single antenna
Dual radios with two antennas
design is recommended for TOS, and
applications that do not have large
bandwidth requirements.
• The dual-radio with two antenna design
is recommended for OCR, automation
and tele-remote applications. This
setup offers:
• Hardware redundancy. 1x HORN 2x HORN

• Less than 500 m/s downtime if 1x 3500 ENDO 2x 3500 ENDO

Network Structure
(Omnidirectional & Unidirectional Antennas | Access & Mobility)
Within An Access Network
Omnidirectional antennas are well-suited:
• For TOSs and other applications with modest bandwidth needs.
• For projects making use of a single radio frequency.
• To cover large areas from multiple directions using relatively low signal
strengths.
• To short-distance operation.
• For vehicles that change their orientation through 360°.
Unidirectional antennas are well-suited:
• For OCR, automation, and other applications needing greater connection
reliability.
• STS Cranes
• For projects making use of more than one radio frequency.
• To mixed-application projects.
• To long-distance operation.
• For areas where omnidirectional antennas might cause radio interference.

High-level System Design
The following factors must be taken into account when
beginning a new system design.

The port/terminal application:

• TOS
• OCR
• Automation
• Mixed applications

The active areas within the terminal that need coverage

depend on the type of application taking place in each
relevant area.

A comprehensive map of the terminal is needed, showing

the following information:
• The location and height of all available light poles.
• Which poles have fiber drop links near by.
• Expected locations, numbers and types of moving
vehicles needing connectivity.

High-level System Design
The following factors must be considered when
beginning a new system design:

The overall project budget, taking the following into account:

• Any need for Mesh-end failover.
• Whether a single or dual-radio design is needed.
• Any need for Access network failover.
• The available radio spectrum on site.

(Radio-density Based RF Planning)
• The design can utilize two or more frequencies, based on radio density per area
and the types of applications running on the system.
• Terminal tractors and reach stackers can use multi-frequency setups.

System RF planning
• The system may use two or more radio channels, based on the result of the RF study.
• Tele-remote and OCR operations must use channels separate from the rest of the system.
Document each location where radio hardware will be installed
• All light poles and moving vehicles specified during the design phase must have unique names.
• A list containing these names will save time during installation, operation and troubleshooting.
