misplaced of tools used by workers and harmful chemicals being exposed in a warehouse. An
industrial vending machines helps a company that has a warehouse to manage their warehouse in
a more effective way. Over the years, many accidents had occurred due to not handling the tools
and appliances properly in the warehouse. In order to solve these problems, the organisations need
to be in a right mind set including thinking out of the box. In this case, we are innovating an
industrial vending machine. This is done my customizing our vending machine with face scanner.
The aim of this industrial vending machine is to help employees to access the industrial tools with
face scanning system while without using employee identity card. The key questions are what are
the role of face scanning in an industrial vending machine? and how effective is the face scanning
innovation? The expended contributions are to reduce cost, to improve work efficiency, and to
eliminating theft. In conclusion, this industrial vending machine with face scanner system can
save space and time, avoid cases of theft, save on the cost of employee needs or inventory, and
simplify and speed up the operation process.

2.0 Motivation / Background

A warehouse is an area prepared by a logistics company to store goods before delivering it

to the customers. Those goods are meant to be taken care of from damages and accidents.
Therefore, the staffs in the warehouse need to have tools and appliances when handling those
goods. On the other hand, they also need to protect those goods from harmful chemicals. There
are many reasons why a warehouse needs to be managed and organised properly. Over the years,
many accidents had occurred due to not handling the tools and appliances properly in the
warehouse. Due to that many technologies have been created to optimize and organised the
warehouse area for a proper management. However, there are still misplaced of tools used by
1

workers and harmful chemicals being exposed in a warehouse. This happens because tools like
duct tape, glue, gloves, screw drivers are always need in handling goods. In addition, sometimes
those tools can be harmful. Hence, a new technology has been created to store tools and appliances
and it’s called an Industrial Vending Machines. An industrial vending machines helps a company
that has a warehouse to manage their warehouse in a more effective way. Employees in the
warehouse are able to have access of to the vending machines to get the tools they need. The
purpose of this machine is to provide employees with tools and materials need to perform their
task and activities on a daily basis. Useful industrial devices are stored in the machines and
employees are allowed to have access to it at any time.

In addition, harmful chemicals and tools are stored in a safer place where it is not exposed
around the warehouse freely. Hence accidents and damages are avoided easily. The existence of
this machine would help to increase employee’s productivity and reduce waste of time. This will
allow the operations in the warehouse to work efficiently. This is because problems like stocked
out, missing equipment and machinery downtime can be avoided resulting in rapid tracking and
restocking in the warehouse. An innovation is the process of renewing and updating a domain, a
product, or a service by implementing new procedures, introducing new techniques, or generating
effective concepts to produce new value. Innovation is important especially in a competitive
industry. This is because innovations help company to step-up their game to standardize
themselves with their competitors. Organisations has to come up with new and different
innovations to make it a valid innovation. It is also one of the important drivers for the long-term
success of a company. In order to have a proper innovation, the organisations need to be in a right
mind set including thinking out of the box. In this case, we are innovating an industrial vending
machine. This is done my customizing our vending machine with face scanner.

3.0 Problem Statement

An industrial vending machine usually need employee’s card in order to get access of the
tool. However, sometimes those cards can be lost or get into the hands of the wrong person which
can cause harm to the whole organisation. The reason this machine has a scanner is to avoid non-
employees to have access of the dangerous tools that can cause harm for everyone in the

warehouse. This is because manual distribution is uncontrollable and can result in theft, abuse,
damage, and shortages. Generally, our main purpose of this innovation is taking consideration of
employee’s mistakes of losing their cards to get access to the vending machine. In addition,
sometimes the chip in the card can’t be detected which will waste the time of the employee from
performing their tasks. Hence, we have created an ultimatum for employees to get access to the
vending machine that is through face scanning. Employees are allowed to register their face in the
system and get the tools they need easily without wasting their time and other employees time.
Work will not be pending, and operation become smoother and more efficient.

5.0 Discussion

In the logistics industry sector, most companies or factories are very concerned about the
quality of their products. Manufacturing a good product can be produced when a factory or
industry has a workforce that is skilled in using equipment or machines and experienced in a
particular field and task. However, the type of goods or equipment used during operation must
also be adequate and appropriate to the operating process of the product. This is to ensure that the
manufacture of a product has a good function and also quality specifications. With this, to achieve
this objective, we have built an innovation project based on the original idea of the industrial
vending machine that has been innovated for the use of employees, especially those in the
manufacturing industry. This is because, usually the goods or products in the vending machine
are snacks and drinks and require buyers to put in money to get them, but for this innovation
project, we have put employee necessities as the main product of this project. Even employees do
not have to use money to get goods, instead they just need to make a face scan on the screen
available on the vending machine to get the work equipment they want.

We chose to innovate on the industrial vending machine because there are several features,
functions and benefits that can be enjoyed by users. Among the interesting features of vending
machines that have been innovated is that we use the face scan method as verification of employee
identity to allow them to select the items or work equipment they need. This is to prevent chip
damage if they use the employee's ID card as verification because this will cause the employee to
not be able to obtain the equipment they want at once, slowing down the manufacturing process
of a product. This can also prevent any disciplinary misunderstanding between the organization
and employees because it will happen if there are irresponsible individuals stealing and using the
id card for self -satisfaction. Not only that, but the use of this vending machine is also safer and
more secure. This is because it will only work or respond if the face or identity of the individual
has been updated by the company's organization into the vending machine system and even the
structure of the machine is also made of galvanized steel, plastics such as lexan, acrylic powder
coating and polyurethane insulation having advanced safety system specifications. Indirectly, the
equipment or work requirements that are in the machine will be more assured of safety and quality.
In fact, this can also prevent an industrial company from incurring losses or excess costs as a result
of covering the loss or damage to employee needs such as work equipment, clothing and so on.

ALS3064 Logistics Information System (LIS)

The industrial vending machines have also been fitted with customer -friendly LCD screens and
equipped with cameras intended for scanning. Furthermore, the screen also serves as a system that
displays a menu or list of items required by the employee and to further simplify the situation, the
list of such items has been displayed in the form of pictures. Employees only need to click on the
picture of the item they selected, and it only takes a few seconds for the door on the machine to
open and then employees can pick up the item immediately. With this, workers do not have to
spend a long time to find goods or work equipment in case it is lost or more, thus saving time and
speeding up the manufacturing process and the production produced is also more profitable.
However, not all items are in the machine because after collection and return, the inventory
management will automatically record the transaction and adjust the inventory level and it will
also track how the machine is used and provide inventory data.

In addition, this vending machine is also suitable for industry that operates for a long time
because this vending machine has been set time system to operate for 24 hours and for double
savings, the industry company can use solar energy as electricity to turn on the machine. So, this
allows employees to get their work needs at any time easily and quickly. Not only that, this vending
machine also benefits a company because it works to reduce inventory expenditure by 20% to 50%
but also inventory control or the need of the employee is also complete in access by item,
department, employee, job and so on. In turn, it can also save space in a factory or warehouse.
This is because this vending machine is able to accommodate the needs of employees as many as
10 to 15 types of goods depending on the size and type of goods. Meanwhile, the stock of goods
or inventory will always be checked and increased in quantity if reduced. The goods or inventory
will be restocked according to the minimum quantity and capacity set. With this, work items that
are essential for a particular manufacture will always be in stock even if it is limited. Therefore,
with the vending machine for industrial necessities, it will launch the working process or operation
of the factory in producing more quality and efficient products.

6.0 Expected Contribution

Industrial vending machines are automated equipment that provides industrial spare parts
and equipment to employees so that they can more easily perform tasks efficiently and on time. It
can be installed in the warehouse for dispensing and adding equipment automatically to
employees. Employees can access 24/7 all the equipment they need so they can be able to complete
their work. With this, it can ensure the operation runs smoothly. Therefore, installing industrial
vending machines in the warehouse can make the expected contribution.

The first expected contribution of industrial vending machines is to reduce costs. To

prevent excessive use and waste of equipment, industrial vending machines limit and restrict
access to equipment to control each piece of equipment used by workers. It can also track usage
so that it can optimize inventory levels. This can also prevent the loss of equipment and save
money on buying new tools and spare parts. In addition, it can eliminate the need to store excess
items, prevent inventory shortages and increase efficiency. Therefore, this machine can reduce
storage costs. In addition, industrial vending machines also can reduce labour costs as they do not
require workers to manage equipment.

The second expected contribution of industrial vending machines is to improve work

efficiency. Industrial vending machines can help employees improve work efficiency as it does
not require taking up too much space. Industrial vending machines can be placed in warehouses
or stock locations to make it easier for employees to find and get what they need when they need
it. Placing multiple industrial vending machines can reduce downtime and reduce employee
movement time to get items. With this, workers do not have to spend a lot of time looking for
industrial vending machines and can get the job done quickly.

The third expected contribution of industrial vending machines is eliminating theft. Since
the equipment is often stolen in warehouses, therefore installing industrial vending machines is a
good decision. Industrial vending machines limit employees getting the number of equipment and
can ask them to be responsible for returning equipment. Installing industrial vending machines is
to prevent workers from stealing, prevent loss of equipment, remind workers to avoid wastage of
equipment, and take good care of the equipment while working.
