Course Objectives & Competences to be acquired:
 To introduce students to the broad concepts of Research Methods in
engineering in general in Electrical and Computer Engineering in particular.
 To introduce students to a variety of issues, concepts, methods, and
techniques associated with research in the realm of Electrical and Computer
Engineering.
 To introduce students to technical research paper reading and writing
methods
 To introduce students to technical skills of proposal and thesis writing
 To introduce students how to review scientific literatures.
 To introduce students presentation skills both in written and oral form
 To prepare students to be knowledgeable of selected research topics and
works.
Course content
Chapter 1: Introduction
Definition research, who does a research, Outcomes of a research, Motivation and
characteristics of research, scientific research methods, and Types of researches.
Chapter 2: Research Process
Source of research problem, selecting research topic, Stating and formulating
research. Problem, delimitation, Scope and assumption of research, literature
review, developing objectives and hypothesis for research problem, Research
Methodologies.
Chapter 3: Literature Review
Source of Scientific literature, Benefits of Literature Review, Outline for Review
Process, Literature Search
Chapter 4: Proposal and Thesis Writing
How to write a proposal, How to write thesis document
Chapter 5: Research Ethics
Ethical consideration in considerations in a research process
Chapter 6: Presentation Skills
Evaluation*:
Two test & a quiz 30%
Proposal Writing 20%
Presentation 10%
Final Exam 40%
*The Evaluation Scheme is subjected to change.
Attendance Requirement: 80% lecture attendance (According to the university’s
senate legislation)
