Open Ended Lab (ME-115)

The document provides instructions for an engineering mechanics laboratory assignment on determining forces in a truss assembly using SolidWorks. Students are asked to: [1] Analyze a provided truss using the method of joints to find member forces, [2] Model the truss in SolidWorks and perform static analysis to virtually find member forces, [3] Validate the SolidWorks analysis by comparing results to the theoretical method of joints analysis. The truss dimensions and applied loads depend on the student's registration number. Students must submit individual reports and SolidWorks files by the deadline to receive marks. The rubric evaluates deliverables, abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion sections.

ENGINEERING MECHANICS LABORATORY

Course Code ME-115 Semester Fall 2022
Credit Hours 0-1 Pre-requisite -
Codes
Instructor: Engr. Sohail/ LE Class BE-ME-13A,B,C

Assignment: Open Ended Lab Weightage 15%
CLO3 Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for
engineering practice.

Title: Determination of Forces in members of a given Truss Assembly using

SOLIDWORKS
Objectives:
A truss assembly is shown in the figure below. You need to analyze the given assembly of truss to
find out forces in its members. For that, you will be using Method of Joints to solve the given truss
for its force members with dimensions in accordance with your CMS ID as explained in the
specifications, then the same assembly needs to be modelled in SOLIDWORKS. You will be
performing static analysis of the modelled assembly and find force members virtually. After
finding forces by both methods, you will be validating your SOLIDWORKS analysis by
comparing the results with that of theoretical ones using method of joints.
Truss Assembly Specifications:

F1 = (50 + SDR) N
F2 = (200 + 10*SDR) N
A = (1000 + 20*SDR) mm
B = (500 + 10*SDR) mm
C = (300 – 2*SDR) mm
Where SDR is Sum of Digits of Registration No. e.g., if your CMS ID is 380021, SDR is
3+8+0+0+2+1 = 14.

Moreover, at joint 1, there is a pin support while a rocker support is present at joint 5.
Deliverables:
1. Individual Report. (In WORD format, both hard and soft form)
2. SOLIDWORKS file in sldprt format with all simulation files.

Submission Guidelines:
Students are required to submit the deliverables of Open Ended Lab till 30th November 2022,
11:59 pm. Soft form submission will be on MS teams, for that, assignment will be created in due
course. Title of the report should be your full name followed by CMS ID e.g., Muhammad
Arsalan_380021. Moreover, reports will be collected in hard form as well till the mentioned date.
Late submissions will not be allowed.
Note: Maximum allowed similarity index is 30% with any internet source. After 30%, each percent
will result in deduction of 0.25 mark (e.g., if a student has similarity index of 32 %, 0.5 mark will
be deducted from overall obtained marks).
Students are not allowed to copy other students’ work, students involved in plagiarism will be
marked 0.
Suggestion:
For sketching free body diagrams, you can either use MS PowerPoint or MS Visio for convenience
in labeling them.
Follow the template and rubrics mentioned below to score maximum marks.
