The Five Forms of Contemporary Arts

The document discusses five forms of contemporary art: 1) Fine-art photography which uses photography as a creative medium of expression rather than just documentation. 2) Installation art which transforms the perception of space, often involving site-specific interior interventions. 3) Land art which expands the boundaries of art using natural earth materials and distant outdoor locations as the medium. 4) Animation art which brings drawings to life through the visual art of creating motion pictures from a series of still images. 5) Poster art which temporarily promotes ideas, products or events through eye-catching graphic and textual designs for mass consumption.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS

Photography

“The Tetons and the Snake River”

by Ansel Adams

Fine-art photography or Photographic art is photography created in line with the vision of the

photographer as artist, using photography as a medium for creative expression. The goal of fine-
art photography is to express an idea, a message, or an emotion. This stands in contrast to
representational photography, such as photojournalism, which provides a documentary visual
account of specific subjects and events, literally representing objective reality rather than the
subjective intent of the photographer; and commercial photography, the primary focus of which
is to advertise products, or services.
Installation Art

“Embankment at Tate Modern”

by Rachel Whiteread

Installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and

designed to transform the perception of a space. Generally, the term is applied to interior spaces,
whereas exterior interventions are often called public art, land art or art intervention; however,
the boundaries between these terms overlap.
Land Art

“Meteorite”
by Milton Becerra

Land art, variously known as Earth art, environmental art, and Earthworks, is an art

movement that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, largely associated with Great Britain and the
United States but that also includes examples from many countries. As a trend, "land art"
expanded boundaries of art by the materials used and the siting of the works. The materials used
were often the materials of the Earth, including the soil, rocks, vegetation, and water found on-
site, and the sites of the works were often distant from population centers. Though sometimes
fairly inaccessible, photo documentation was commonly brought back to the urban art gallery.
Animation Art

“Darth Vader”
from Disney’s Star Wars animated series “Star Wars: Rebels”

Animation (from the Latin word, “animare”, to breathe life into) is the visual art of making a
motion picture from a series of still drawings. A method in which figures are manipulated to
appear as moving images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on
transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film.
Poster Art

“Star Wars”
the official film poster of Star Wars (1977)

A poster art is a temporary promotion of an idea, product, or event put up in a public space for
mass consumption. Typically, posters include both textual and graphic elements, although a
poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly text. Posters are designed to be both eye-
catching and informative. Posters may be used for many purposes. They are a frequent tool of
advertisers (particularly of events, musicians, and films), propagandists, protestors, and other
groups trying to communicate a message.
