MI31005 Ventilation & Climate Control MA 2016
Mid-Autumn Semester Examination Date & Time: 16 Sept 2016 2.00 pm -4.00 pm
Subject # & Name: MI3100S - Ventilation and Climate Control # Students: 71 Max Marks: 60
Q.1.a. Do you agree with the following statements? Give your reasons for agreement or
disagreement.
i. 'An underground atmosphere saturated at 30°C is less preferable than an atmosphere having
TO = 35°C and TW = 30°C although both have the same heat content of about 100 kl/kgda'.
ii. 'Mixing of two unsaturated air streams CANNOT produce a saturated resultant'.
iii. 'Auto compression, belt conveyor motor, and oxidation are examples of sensible heat load
sources to ventilating air stream'. {7.S}
b. An intake shaft of depth 1000 m has air flowing through it at a rate of 100 kgda/s. On the surface
the conditions are B=101.3 kPa, and TO and TW are 35°C and 25°C respectively. At the bottom of
the shaft the dry bulb temperature is 32°C at a mixing ratio of 0.02 kg/kgda. Determine the
following in kW. {Warning: You cannot use given psychrometric chart to estimate the shaft bottom
psychrometric conditions}.
i. Heat-load due to auto-compression, ii. Rock to air sensible heat transfer, and iii. Rock to air latent
heat transfer {7.S}
Q.2.a. In a stope in a metal mine the following thermal environmental conditions are observed:
Barometric pressure: 101.3 kPa, velocity of air: 1.5 mIs, ambient TO: 34°C, TW: 29°C, skin
temperature of the mine worker: 34.5°C, fraction of body surface that is wet is 0.8. For a
metabolism rate of 200 W/m2, would you consider the ACP (Air cooling Power) of the atmosphere
acceptable? {7.S}
(Helpful formulas:
965 p1.6UO.6
E = (P - e)2
(eSk - e)w
b. Air flows through a level roadway at 30 m3/s. Inlet air properties are TO = 28°C, TW = 26°C, and
B = 101.3 kPa. A diesel loader of rated power 100 hp having a MUF of 0.8, and a WFR of 7.3 1/1
operates in the roadway. Determine the outlet TO and TW for the air assuming that there are no
other heat load sources. {7.S}
Q.3.a. In a surface bulk cooling situation at a location with barometric pressure of 101.3 kPa,
3
90 m /s of inlet air into a shaft at ambient temperature of 32°C TO and rrc. TW, is divided into
two equal streams. One stream is passed through cooling coils that circulate brine. The brine
solution has a flow rate of 30 I/s, specific gravity 1.2 and specific heat 3.2 kJ/kg "c. The brine
solution experiences a temperature change from 3°C to 11°C during heat exchange with air. The
cooled air from the coils mixes with the ambient air stream before entering the shaft. What are the
estimated dry and wet bulb temperatures for the air mixture? (10)
b. Outline and explain the reasons why coal mines of comparable depth can be hotter than metal
mines? (5)
QA.a. In an underground horizontal spray chamber having a factor of merit 0.5, chilled water is
sprayed at an inlet temperature of 5°C and flow rate 20 I/s. The inlet air having a flow rate of 40
kgda/s at a barometric pressure of 101.3 kPa, has TO= 32°C and TW =30°C. Predict the water outlet
temperature and the air outlet TO and TW. (10)

properties of laminar flow and turbulent flow in a pipeline. (5)
