Activity 4 - MathLogic

This document appears to be an activity or assignment assessing logical reasoning skills. It contains 5 sections: 1) Identifying different types of statements 2) Determining the truth value of statements involving logic 3) Translating statements between symbolic and linguistic forms 4) Constructing truth tables for compound propositions 5) Analyzing the validity of arguments using truth tables The document tests a variety of concepts in propositional logic including statements, truth functions, translations between forms, and determining validity through truth tables.

Activity # 4
I. Identify each of the following sentences as a simple statement, compound statement
or neither. Classify each compound statement as a negation, conjunction,
disjunction, conditional, or biconditional.

conjunction 1.) It is false that Rey is in class.

negation 2.) Today is Friday.
conditional 3.) If Ruel is went sailing, then May went swimming.
disjunction 4.) Erase the writings on the board before you leave.
biconditional 5.) Both April and Jaris are members of the club.

II. True or False. Write true if the statement is right and false if wrong on the space
before each number.

false 1.) The sentence “Is your homework finished?” is considered to be a statement in logic.
true 2.) “Today is Monday or my watch is wrong”, is an example of a disjunction.
true 3.) The answer column of the truth table for p → q is T, F, T, F.
false 4.) p ᴧ (q ᴠ ~p) is a tautology.
false 5.) “It is false that you did not study and you passed the exam” is logically equivalent to
false 6.) “You did study or you did not pass the exam”.
true 7.) A valid argument can have either a true or false conclusion.
true 8.) “If I do not pass this course, then I cannot graduate”, is the converse of “If I do pass
this course, then I can graduate”.
true 9.) “If you work hard, then you will succeed” is the contrapositive of “If you don’t
succeed, then you didn’t work hard”.
false 10.) (p ᴧ ~q) → (q ᴠ r) is a contradiction.
true 11.) “If you attend class, then you will pass” is the inverse of “If you did not pass, then
you did not attend class.

III. Let p: Algebra is difficult and q: Logic is easy. Write each of the following statements
in symbolic form.

p⋁q Algebra is difficult or Logic is easy.

⁓q ⋁ p Logic is not easy, and Algebra is difficult.
⁓q ¬ q, or q’ It is false that Logic is not easy.
p → q If Algebra is difficult, then logic is easy.
p ↔ q Logic is easy iff algebra is difficult.
IV. Write the truth table for each of the following compound propositions and determine
whether the compound proposition is tautology, contradiction, or contingency.

1.) ( p q) (p q)

2.) (p ~q) ( p q)

3.) p (p q)

4.) [(~p q) (q r)] (~p r)

V. Symbolize each of the following arguments (using p and q) and by means of a truth
table, determine whether the argument is valid or not. State your answer.

1.) If you invest in the Gomermatic Corporation, then you get rich
You didn't invest in the Gomermatic Corporation
Therefore, you didn't get rich
2.) If you bought bread, then you went to the store
