between two parallel lines in 30 feet marking where two
wooden blocks are similar objects are placed behind
them. Start the shuttle run at the opposite side of the
blocks when you hear the “GO” signal.
Scoring: Record the shortest time performed after two
trials.

4
Alternate Wall Toss
Purpose: To test the hand-eye coordination.
Equipment Required: tennis ball, smooth solid wall,
and a stopwatch.

Procedure: Mark a 2 or 3 feet distance from the wall.

The performer will stand behind the specified distance
facing the wall. Throw the ball underarm and with one
hand against the wall and catch it with the other hand.
Continue this process within 30 seconds.
Scoring: Record the number of catches in a 30-
second period.

Ruler Drop Test

Purpose: To measure the hand and eye quickness and
attentiveness.
Equipment Required: ruler and timer.

Procedure: Have your partner hold the ruler with the

bottom edge level with the top of your hand. Use
centimeters for your measurement, with the 1 cm end
pointing down. Your partner should release
the ruler between your fingers at an unanticipated
moment. Catch the ruler as quickly as possible.

History of Badminton

⮚ It was invented in India in a version called poona. British army officers learned the game
around 1870. In 1873 the duke of Beaufort introduced the sport at his country estate,
Badminton, from which the game derived its name.
⮚ The game was also known as Poona or Poonah after the garrison town of Pune where it
was particularly popular and where the first rules for the game were drawn up in 1873. In
1804, it was known as battledore and shuttlecock; first name of badminton.
⮚ It was in the 1920s when British and American expatriates introduced badminton in the
Philippines. The 1949 national rankings produced Mr. Adriano Torres - the first national
Men's Singles champion. It was in 1950 when the Philippines became the 21st country to
join the International Badminton Federation (IBF).
⮚ Badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992. It can be played indoors or outdoors,
singles or doubles. The game requires quick reflexes, finesse and good conditioned
players
⮚ The aim of badminton is to hit the shuttlecock with your racket so that it passes over the
net and lands inside your opponent's half of the court. Whenever you do this, you have
won a rally; win enough rallies, and you win the match.

Nature of Badminton

Facilities and Equipment

1. Racket

⮚ It is one of the most important tools a player has in the game.

⮚ It is much lighter than most other sports rackets because they are made from materials
such as carbon fiber or lighter metals such as aluminum.

⮚ The parts include the head, throat, shaft and handle with a maximum length of 27.77
inches and a width of 9 inches. The strings that are stretched across the opening of the
racket in a checkerboard pattern act as the hitting surface.

⮚ It can vary widely in cost depending on whether they are purchased as part of a basic
backyard set or as more expensive professional models.

2. Shuttlecock

⮚ It is also referred to as a shuttle or birdie, acts similarly to a ball in other racket sports.

⮚ The design of the birdie creates more drag as it is propelled through the air due to its
feathered shape.

⮚ It is made up of a cone shape with a hard cork at its tip.

⮚ It can be made from a variety of materials -- more expensive models are actually made
from feathers, and less expensive models are made from plastic feathers.

⮚ It has 16 feathers attached to the base and the length of the feathers range between
2.44 and 2.75 inches.

3. Net

⮚ It divides the badminton court into two sides.

⮚ It is placed lower than a volleyball net at five feet and one inch high on the sides and five

12
feet high in the center.

⮚ The length may vary depending on whether doubles or singles are playing, with singles
reaching 17 feet and doubles reaching 22 feet.

⮚ It is 30 inches wide with a 3-inch white tape doubled over the top.

4. Facilities

⮚ The badminton court should be 44 feet long by 22 feet wide if playing doubles, and 44
feet long by 17 feet wide for singles.

⮚ If the facility is indoors, there needs to be enough height for the shuttlecock to be able to
float across the net without hitting the ceiling. This height will vary depending on the
strength of the players.

Benefits of Badminton
1. reduces weight and gets rid of excess fat
2. reduces risk of diabetes
3. improves reflexes, intelligence and productivity
4. helps maintain your physique

BASIC SKILLS IN BADMINTON

Grip of the Racket

One of the basic skills that you should know is
racket handling which is also called grip.
1. Forehand Grip

● Hold your racket in a handshake manner.

● Make a “V” with your thumb and forefingers

exactly on top of the handle.

● Relax your hand until your feel the grip

comfortably.
2. Backhand Grip

● Hold your racket just like the forehand except

that your hand is rotated slightly to the left.

● The thumb is placed against the side of the

handle.

Serves
Another basic skill in playing badminton is the service. It begins the play.
1. Long High Serve

● Stand with feet apart near the center

line about four to five feet behind the
service line of the court.

● Sway your feet up and back with your

dominant foot back.

● Hold the handle of your racket with your

forefinger and thumb of your dominant
hand.

● Cock your hand and wrist as you move

18
your racket arm in backswing position.

● Transfer the weight of your back foot to your forward foot and hit the shuttle at knee
height.

● Always make a follow through.

2. Short Deep Serve

● This is your basic serve for doubles play.

● Position is the same with long serve

except that you have to strike the shuttle
in a manner that it just clears the net and
falls close to the front of the service
court.

Activity 1: COMPLICTURE
Direction: Complete each statement about proper execution of grip skill in badminton. The
pictures below will serve as your clue. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Hold your racket in a _________manner.
2. Hold your ______ just like the forehand except that your hand is rotated slightly to the left.
3. The _______ is placed against the side of the handle.
4. _______your hand until your feel the grip comfortably.
5. Make a “V” with your thumb and forefingers exactly on top of the _______.

A B C D E

Activity 2: TRUE OR FALSE

Direction: Write True if the statement is true about serving skill in badminton and False if it is
not.
1. Hold the handle of your racket with your forefinger and thumb of your dominant hand.
2. Short deep serve is the basic serve for singles play.
3. Sway your feet up and back with your dominant foot back.
4. Transfer the weight of your forward foot to your back foot and hit the shuttle at knee
height.
5. Cock your hand and wrist as you move your racket arm in backswing position.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

Shots

19
1.Clear shot
Trajectory: high, towards the back court
Played from: Back court
Purpose: Defensive shot

Aim of this shot is to let the shuttle fly high in the air
and land at your opponent’s back court. It is used
when you need time to get back to the base before
the next return or if you don’t have a clear
opportunity to kill and win the point.

2. Drop
Trajectory: Looping close to the net
Played from: Back court
Purpose: Attacking Shot

It is used when the shuttle is heading towards you in

the back court. As an attempt to this stroke, the
player must hit downward towards the opponent’s
fore-court, aiming for it to go just over the net. The
closer the shuttle drops to the net, the harder it is to
return.
This shot is used when the opponent is in the back
court, expecting a clear shot or a drive

3. Drive
Trajectory: Flat, towards the body
Played from: Mid-court
Purpose: Defensive Shot

The drive is a flat shot hit directly and slightly over

the net. It is a very powerful and quick counter
attacking shot. Your racket should be held with the
head facing straight ahead. It can sometimes be
strategic to aim the shot at your opponent who will
be unable to react or shift his body in time as their
natural reaction will be to duck/avoid the shot.

20
4. Smash
Trajectory: Close to the net
Played from: Back court/Mid-court
Purpose: To provide less time for the opponent

Most lethal shot in badminton. It can be defined as a

drive angled downwards. It can be used when the
shuttle is high in the air and can be angled
downwards.

5. Net Lift
Trajectory: high, towards the back court
Played from: Forecourt
Purpose: Defensive shot

The net lift sends the shuttle high up to your
