2.2 Negative Numbers - Add and Subtract

This document discusses addition and subtraction of negative numbers. It provides examples of adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. The key rules are: 1) When adding two numbers with the same sign, keep the sign. When adding two numbers with different signs, the result is positive. 2) To subtract a negative number, change the subtraction sign to addition and keep the number negative. 3) Worked examples and practice problems with explanations are provided to illustrate how to apply the rules to calculate temperatures, altitudes, and other real world application problems involving negative numbers.

Worked Example 1

The temperature of a city at night is -5 ℃. The next

morning, the temperature rises by 3 ℃. Find the
temperature in the morning.

Solution:
Temperature in the morning = -5 + 3
= -2 ℃
Practise Now 1

The temperature of a town at night is -8 ℃. The next

morning, the temperature rises by 2 ℃. Find the
temperature in the morning.

Solution:
Temperature in the morning = -8 + 2
= -6 ℃

Worked Example 2

Solution:
Point A shows -10 ℃.
Point B shows 15 ℃.
Difference in temperature = 15 ℃ - (-10 ℃)
= 15℃ + 10 ℃
= 25 ℃
Practise Now 2

Solution:
Point A shows -10 ℃.
Point B shows 23 ℃.
Difference in temperature = 23 ℃ - (-10 ℃)
= 23 ℃ + 10 ℃
= 33 ℃
Practise Now 2

Solution:
Point C = 314 m above sea level
Point D = -165 m above sea level
Difference in altitude = 314 - (-165)
= 314 + 165
= 479 m
