01 Hardware & Types of Hardware

Computer hardware refers to any physical device connected to a computer system. It includes components like monitors, keyboards, mice, and internal components like the CPU, memory, motherboard, and storage drives. Hardware is categorized into input devices that take user input, output devices that display information to the user, processing devices that perform computations, and storage devices that hold data. Common hardware upgrades include increasing RAM memory or replacing the video card to improve performance.

Computer Hardware

 Abbreviated as HW, Hardware is best described as a device that is physically connected

to your computer, something tangible.
 Most hardware will contain a circuit board, ICs, and other electronics.
 A perfect example of hardware is a computermonitor, which is an output device that
allows the user to interface visually with the computer.
 Without any hardware, your computer would not exist, and software would not be able
to run.
 Hardware components are often categorized as being either input, output, storage or
processing components.

The main hardware components of a computer system

 Input devices: - are hardware devices which take information from the user of the
computer system, convert it into electrical signals and transmit it to the processor.
o The primary function of input devices is to allow humans to interact with the
computer system.
o For instance a mouseallows the user to control the movement of the pointer (a
common element in user interface design).
 Output devices: - take data from the computer system and convert it to a form that can
be interpreted by humans.
o For instance a monitor creates a visual electronic display to output information
created by the processor to the user.
 Processing devices: - are the components responsible for the processing of
information within the computer system.
o This includes devices such as the CPU, memory and motherboard.

 Storage devices: - are components which allow data to be stored within a computer
system. This includes devices such as hard disk drives and compact disk drives.

 Hardware components are also often categorized as External&Internal components.

What are hardware upgrades?

 A hardware upgrade is any new hardware that replaces or adds to old hardware in the
computer.
 A good example of a common hardware upgrade is a RAM upgrade, where the user is
increasing the computers total memory.
 Another good example is a video card upgrade, which is the act of removing an old video
card and replacing it with a new one, thus increasing the performance of the computer.
