PASSAGE 1

Can Animals Predict Earthquakes?

Janet’s letter:
Dear Scientist Sam,
I noticed my dog acting very nervous only a few minutes before a recent earthquake
shook the house. Is it possible that my dog knew the earthquake was going to happen?
Janet
Sam’s reply:
Well, Janet, people have believed for many centuries that animals can predict
earthquakes. In fact, we can look back to records from the ancient Greeks. They noticed
that animals acted oddly in the hours before earthquakes. Even now, people talk about
dogs that won’t stop barking and cats that won’t come out of hiding before an
earthquake. Furthermore, strange behavior like this before earthquakes isn’t limited to
pets. People have also reported seeing chickens stop laying eggs, bees leaving their
homes, and big groups of fish dying mysteriously in the hours before a natural disaster
hits.
It’s hard to to anser your question, since not all seismologists (1) or animal experts agree
that animals can predict earthquakes. Those that disagree claim we should take into
account other things that affect animal bahavior, such as hunger. On the other hand,
many people believe that animals can predict earthquakes often have records of very
strange animal behavior right before the ground shakes. To them, this is evidence that
animals can indeed predict earthquakes.
In short, the truth is that we aren’t sure. Animals might be able to sense earthquakes
before they happen, but there is no solid evidence that they can. However, one thing that
most seismologists can agree on is that more research is needed. Animals may be the
key to predicting earthquakes beore they happen, and could help save many lives.
(1) A seismologist is a scientist who studies earthquakes and movements of the earth.

TASK 1 Choose a, b, or c as the correct answer for the following questions.

Write A, B, or C in your answer sheet.
1. According to the passage, which of these statements is correct?
a. People have always believed that animals can predict earthquakes.

4. Which of these is NOT a reason that Scientist Sam cannot really answer Janet’s
question?
a. People have different opinions on the issue.
b. He personally does not believe animals can predict earthquakes.

3

TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN.
Write T for True, F for false, or NT for Not Given in your answer sheet.

PASSAGE 2

UFOs: Are They Out There?

A As the twentieth century came to an end, something strange seemed to be
happening in the skies. Reports of UFOs, or “Unidentified Flying Objects”, suddenly
increased. Many of these reports came from China.

B One of the most dramatic UFO reports came in 1998. It took place at a military
base in the north province of Heibei. Four rada stations reported an unidentifies object
in the sky. Over 140 people on the ground said they saw the UFO. They said it looked
like a small star. A Chinese air force plane was ordered to intercept the UFO. When the
plane got close to the UFO, the objects moved quickly away. The two pilots of the plane
kept trying to get closer to the UFO. Each time they were about 4,000 meters from it,
the UFO quickly flew away. The plane had to return to its base because it was running
out of fuel.

C Many people believe UFOs are visitors from other planets. One survey found that
50 percent of the Chinese population believes UFOs come from outer space. The
percentage is similar in the United Sates. They point to thousands of sightings as
evidence. In some cases, many witnesses say they have seen the same thing at the same
time. Many airline pilots have reported seeing UFOs. Around one in seven Americans
say they, or someone they know, have seen UFO. How could all these people be wrong?
Finally, they say hundreds of photos of strange objects in the sky prove UFOs exist.

D Skeptics believe there are rational explanations for UFOs. They say many
witnesses just don’t understand what they see. The objects that they see are not visitors
from outer space. They are really ordinary things like airplane lights, or unusal weather
conditions. In addition, skeptics say many reports of UFOs are hoaxes. It is easy to create
fake photographs, espcially with the ditigtal images.

E Many people in different places have describe seeing similar objects. Most of the
early reports, in the 1940s, described things that looked like “flying saucers”. They were
flat and round, with bright lights. In the 1980s, many people also started describing
UFOs shaped like triangles. Believers say this shows people are all seeing the same

4
things. Skeptics say people are just describing UFOs from movies. For example, the
Chinese air force pilots said the object they saw looked like UFOs from foreign movies.
To find out what UFOs look like in the twenty-first century, maybe we should visit a
movie theater.

____ 8. People who don’t believe in UFOs say the witnesses are all lying.

____ 9. About half the people in the United State say they, or someone they know, have

seen a UFO.

____ 10. UFOs are sometimes called flying saucers because they are flat and round.
