Lecture 5 DMS 411 Research Design

This document outlines the research process and methodology chapter for a business research methods course. It discusses defining the research problem, reviewing literature, formulating a hypothesis, outlining the methodology, collecting data, analyzing data, and writing findings. The methodology chapter components include research design, population, sampling and sample size, data collection methods, and proposed data analysis methods. It emphasizes that the research design should properly address the research problem and lead to strong, convincing conclusions and an overall valid study.

Chapter Three: Research Methodology
• Describes what is to be done (how the study is
to be undertaken…. In a logical manner)
Components:
What design strategy will be used?
3.1 Research Design
Who/what is the study unit? Who/what
3.2 Population forms the population of the study?

3.3 Sampling and sample Will sampling be done, and if so, what sampling
size design will be used? What sample size?

What kind of data will be used? Where /from whom

3.4 Data Collection will it be collected? Which/what instrument will be
used and how will the researcher reach the
3.5 Proposed Data respondents /data source?
Analysis Methods
How will the collected data be analyzed &
presented?

What Is Research Design?

• The research design refers to the

researcher overall plan for answering the
research question or testing the research
hypotheses

8
Research design…
• Understanding the relationships among the
research designs is important in making
appropriate choices, thinking about the
strengths and weaknesses of different
designs

• Proper focus on research design leads to:

– the overall research problem adequately
addressed
– any conclusions drawn being strong and
convincing.
– the overall validity of the study sustained

10
• Key concern:
Do the benefits that results from a
more complex design to ensure
accuracy, reliability, confidence,
generalizability (amongst other
considerations) commensurate with
the investment made?

• Research Title
MANUFACTURING STRATEGY IN SMALL
AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES
IN KENYA

Objectives
• To determine the capabilities the firm exploits
to gain advantage over competitors
• To determine the underlying manufacturing
strategy perspective.
• To determine the model of manufacturing
strategy employed.
24
– Research Design
– The study adopted an exploratory design,
which sought to provide an insight and
expand the understanding of the
manufacturing capabilities used in firms. The
study’s aim was to establish which and how
these capabilities affected the operations
and thus defining the what, where and how
much of the operations phenomenon.
