Introduction
1. DROP-IN-BALL INTRODUCTION
Note:
To simplify reading of this manual, system components etc. are mentioned as sin-
gular, e.g. “housing” or “ball”, even if a system for a lifeboat includes 2 housings.
Lifeboat and fast rescue boat is mentioned as “boat”.

If the boat is not water borne, the water borne indicator will not light up, and the HOOK RELEASE
botton is not active.
If the boat is not water borne and hook release is required, the emergency release valve shall be
operated. Emergency release is not depending on boat being water borne.

Release of hook by use of emergency release valve is not depending of signal from the water
sensor.
The emergency release valve is protected against unintended release. To activate the emer-
gency release valve, (1) the Cover, (2) Seal and (3) Safety pin must be removed. Cover is not
displayed on above picture.
The emergency release valve is closed/not activated when the handle is pointing upwards/
vertical, as displayed above. Rotate the handle 45 deg. to activate the emergency valve. As
long as the emergency valve is activated, the piston in the hook housing stays out, to avoid
unintended re-hooking.
Hydraulic system
The hydraulic system is filled with oil. Hydraulic pressure is only present between pump,
accumulator and emergency release valve. The rest of the system is pressure less, until
hook release.
The pressure is build up by using the pump (manaul or electric). A standard hook system
includes a manual pump. As an option an electric pump (hydraulic power unit/HPU) can
be delivered.
The hook system is operational when the hydraulic pressure is in the green area on the
pressure gauge.
Introduction
Introduction to operation
Procedures for release of the hooks and re-hooking are described in secti-
on 2. Normal release (by operation panel, section 2.1) and emergency rele-
ase (by emergency release valve, section 2.3.1) requires no crew action at
the hook, as the release is controlled from helmsmans position.
Re-hooking requires shortly crew action at the hook., and no action by the
helmsman.
In case of on-load emergency release (section 2.3.1) the ball is powerfull
pushed out of the housing . To avoid any danger, crew shall not be
CAUTION! present in front of the hook when the ball is released!
In case of off-load emergency release (section 2.3.2), crew action on the
hook is required, to manually open the hook. Be aware of moving parts,
e.g. the pawl, to avoid damage to fingers or hand.
CAUTION!
Re-hooking (section 2.2, 2.4 and 2.5) requires shortly crew action on the
hook, and no action by the helmsman. As soon as the ball is inside the
housing, and the pawl is in upright position, no further crew action is re-
quired. Hoisting the boat will secure the ball inside the housing, even if the
ball initially is not in vertical position.

Oil ta k
If starting from zero pressure a few strokes gives a rapid increase of pressure.
Continue to pump (more heavy strokes) until presure is in the green area on the
pressure gauge.
When hook is released the hydraulic pressure drops, and the pressure must be
re-build into green area.
The electric HPU includes a pressure switch and a electric pump. When the
pressure drops approx. 15 bars below normal pressure, the electric pump
automatically re-builds the pressure. The electric HPU also includes a hand
pump, as a back-up.
Apart from the back-up hand pump, the electric HPU shall not be operated.
The HPU is sealed, and service must only be performed by authorized service
engineers.
Operation
2. OPERATION
1. Ensure that the pressure is in the green area (if not, use the handpump
to increase the pressure):
2. Ensure that electric power is turned on. The power indicator lights up:
3. Ensure that the boat is waterborne. The waterborne indicator lights up:
4. To release the boat, lift the protection cover and press the HOOK
RELEASE button:
The HOOK RELEASE indicator will light up. The oat is released !
The piston stays out 10 sec to avoid unintended re-hooking.
Operation
If any slack fall wire is required please refer to the davit manufacturers
manual.
Always grab the shaft between the 2 hand protection rings! They
provide safety distance for the hand.
CAUTION!

If a foul weather recovery system is not ordered be the costumer, this section can
be disregarded.
A lifeboat assigned also as rescue boat shall be equipped with a foul weather
recovery system, as heavy fall/floating blocks represent a danger.
By use of this system the boat can be hoisted free of the water, with a safe distance
to the floating block. In a certain position, the recovery strop is disconnected while
the boat is supported by the hanging-off equipment. Then the normal ball (ball 1
ref the operation instruction) is re-connected, and the boat can be lifted to normal
stowed position.
Before disengaging the ball, make sure the boat is secured by use of hanging-
off pendants! To disengage the ball, open the pawl manually ref above section 2.3.2.
CAUTION! Do not activate the emergency release valve, as this is for emergency situations only!

When a training session is ended, do not leave the lifeboat without checking
that the hook system is ready for use.
1. Ensure the hydraulic pressure is in the green area on the pressure gauge.
3. Check oil level in oil tank (oil level between max and min marks).
Check system for leaks.
4. Check that the ball is repositioned in the housing and ensure that the
pawl is in upright position.
Check that the red marking on the pawl is not visible!
Maintenance
4. MAINTENANCE
4.2 Hanging-off
No maintenance or work on the hook system should take place while the
hooks are under load. Use Hanging-off equipment to secure the boat !
The housing has an integrated pad eye for connection of Hanging-off equipment,
see below illustration.
Work Load Limit (WLL) of the pad eye is 2.300 kg, based on weight of empty boat
plus 1.000 kg.
The hook system is delivered with a Green Pin shackle for Hanging-off connection,
having a WLL of 3,25 T. Only this shackle fits to the pad eye.
Mount the shackle only when the Hanging-off equipment is needed, due
to below reasons:
• The shackle may interfere with the ball during re-hooking
• Shackle of screw pin type (without nut and splitter) may not be permanently
mounted
Do not use the Hanging-off pad eye for other purposes than Hanging-off,
e.g. not for bowsing attachment.

Maintenance
Inspection and service shall be done on weekly, monthly, annual and 5 years basis.
Ok Not ok Description
Records of inspections, service and repairs shall be updated and filed onboard.
When repairs and service are completed, a statement confirming that the
Nadiro DROP-IN-BALL hook system is operational, should be issued by
Nadiro representative.
Maintenance
Check that ball is inside the housing and the pawl is in upright
position. Check that no red marking on pawls are visible.
Replace oil and bleed the hydraulic system. Check that oil level is
between the 2 sightglasses.
Check that ball is inside the housing and the pawl is in upright
position. Check that no red marking on pawls are visible.
Check bolted connection bracket-housing.
Check master ring, shackles, pendants etc between hook and floa-
ting block, for cracks, corrosion, misaligments and deformations.
Check that splits in shackles are in place, where relevant.
