Introduction

1. DROP-IN-BALL INTRODUCTION

1.1 System characteristics

The Nadiro DROP-IN-BALL hook system is a release and retrieval

system for lifeboats (dual falls) and rescue boats (single fall).
It is designed as an off-load system (boat waterborne), with an on-load
capability (boat not waterborne).
The system includes 2 hooks (2 housings and 2 balls) for a lifeboat, and
1 hook (1 housing and 1 ball) for a rescue boat.
The housing is mounted on the boat and the ball is attached to the fall.
The ball is released from the housing by hydraulic pressure and the
system is controlled from an operation panel.

The system is designed, tested and approved according to IMO LSA

Code, including MSC.320(89) and MSC.321(89). Therefore the system
e.g. do not need a Fall Preventer Device.

1.2 In the interest of safety

1. During operation of the DROP-IN-BALL system, in general always

be aware of moving parts, electrical equipment/cables and steel ropes.
2. The system is only to be operated by crew members trained in the
DROP-IN-BALL system.

1.3 System overview

The DROP-IN-BALL system consist of the following main components:

• Operation panel
• 2 hooks for a lifeboat, 1 hook for a rescue boat
• Hydraulic system including manual pump (standard) or electric pump
(option) and accumulator
• Emergency release valve and pressure gauge
• Water sensor

Appendix includes a GA drawing for system overview.

Note:
To simplify reading of this manual, system components etc. are mentioned as sin-
gular, e.g. “housing” or “ball”, even if a system for a lifeboat includes 2 housings.
Lifeboat and fast rescue boat is mentioned as “boat”.

• Water borne indicator: when boat is water borne/the sensor is submerged this indicator
lights up

• HOOK RELEASE botton: lift the transparent protection cover and press the red HOOK
RELEASE botton to release the ball/open the hook

• Hook release indicator: when ball is released this indicator lights up

If the boat is not water borne, the water borne indicator will not light up, and the HOOK RELEASE
botton is not active.

If the boat is not water borne and hook release is required, the emergency release valve shall be
operated. Emergency release is not depending on boat being water borne.
See next page.

Release of hook by use of emergency release valve is not depending of signal from the water
sensor.
The emergency release valve is protected against unintended release. To activate the emer-
gency release valve, (1) the Cover, (2) Seal and (3) Safety pin must be removed. Cover is not
displayed on above picture.
The emergency release valve is closed/not activated when the handle is pointing upwards/
vertical, as displayed above. Rotate the handle 45 deg. to activate the emergency valve. As
long as the emergency valve is activated, the piston in the hook housing stays out, to avoid
unintended re-hooking.

Hydraulic system
The hydraulic system is filled with oil. Hydraulic pressure is only present between pump,
accumulator and emergency release valve. The rest of the system is pressure less, until
hook release.
The pressure is build up by using the pump (manaul or electric). A standard hook system
includes a manual pump. As an option an electric pump (hydraulic power unit/HPU) can
be delivered.
The hook system is operational when the hydraulic pressure is in the green area on the
pressure gauge.
Introduction

Right after pumping is stopped (manual or electric) the hydraulic pressure

usually drops a little, as the system adapts to the new pressure.
Variations in ambient temperature changes the volume of gas in the hy-
draulic accumulator, giving variations in the hydraulic pressure.
The hydraulic system is per construction not absolutely tight. A pressure
drop of approx. 1 Bar /24 hours shall be expected. This is internal in the
system, and causes no external leakage.
If the pressure reading is below the green area on the pressure gauge, use
the pump to raise the pressure into the green area.
When hydraulic pressure is inside the green area on the pressure gauge, an
off-load or on-load release can be performed. Off– load and on-load relea-
se can also be performed when the pressure is above the green area.

Introduction to operation
Procedures for release of the hooks and re-hooking are described in secti-
on 2. Normal release (by operation panel, section 2.1) and emergency rele-
ase (by emergency release valve, section 2.3.1) requires no crew action at
the hook, as the release is controlled from helmsmans position.
Re-hooking requires shortly crew action at the hook., and no action by the
helmsman.
In case of on-load emergency release (section 2.3.1) the ball is powerfull
pushed out of the housing . To avoid any danger, crew shall not be
CAUTION! present in front of the hook when the ball is released!
In case of off-load emergency release (section 2.3.2), crew action on the
hook is required, to manually open the hook. Be aware of moving parts,
e.g. the pawl, to avoid damage to fingers or hand.
CAUTION!
Re-hooking (section 2.2, 2.4 and 2.5) requires shortly crew action on the
hook, and no action by the helmsman. As soon as the ball is inside the
housing, and the pawl is in upright position, no further crew action is re-
quired. Hoisting the boat will secure the ball inside the housing, even if the
ball initially is not in vertical position.

If starting from zero pressure a few strokes gives a rapid increase of pressure.
Continue to pump (more heavy strokes) until presure is in the green area on the
pressure gauge.
When hook is released the hydraulic pressure drops, and the pressure must be
re-build into green area.

Electric HPU (optional)

The electric HPU includes a pressure switch and a electric pump. When the
pressure drops approx. 15 bars below normal pressure, the electric pump
automatically re-builds the pressure. The electric HPU also includes a hand
pump, as a back-up.
Apart from the back-up hand pump, the electric HPU shall not be operated.
The HPU is sealed, and service must only be performed by authorized service
engineers.

2.6 Foul weather recovery system (optional equipment)

If a foul weather recovery system is not ordered be the costumer, this section can
be disregarded.

A lifeboat assigned also as rescue boat shall be equipped with a foul weather
recovery system, as heavy fall/floating blocks represent a danger.

A foul weather recovery system includes the following components:

- recovery plate
- recovery strop with shackles
- extra ball
- hanging-off pendant with shackles

By use of this system the boat can be hoisted free of the water, with a safe distance
to the floating block. In a certain position, the recovery strop is disconnected while
the boat is supported by the hanging-off equipment. Then the normal ball (ball 1
ref the operation instruction) is re-connected, and the boat can be lifted to normal
stowed position.

For operation instruction please refer to the provided instruction.

Work Load Limit (WLL) for the Recovery plate is 4,75 T.

Before disengaging the ball, make sure the boat is secured by use of hanging-
off pendants! To disengage the ball, open the pawl manually ref above section 2.3.2.
