Design of Flexible coupling and Draw assembly and detail drawings

as per calculated dimensions.


Problem : It is required to design a Bushed-pin type flexible
coupling to connect the output shaft of an electric motor to the shaft
of a centrifugal pump. The motor delivers X kW power at 700 rpm.
The starting torque of the motor can be assumed to be 120% of the
rated torque. Design the coupling and specify the dimensions of its
components
Value of X –
For Enrollment No – 01 to 9, X will be Enrollment no x 10 KW
For Enrollment No – 9 onwards, X will be Enrollment no KW

Solution
Given kW = X, N = 700 rpm
Design torque = 1.2 (rated torque
Step I Selection of materials
(i) The shafts are subjected to torsional shear stress. On
the basis of strength, plain carbon steel of grade 40C8 (Syt
= 380 N/mm2) is used for the shafts.
The factor of safety for the shaft is assumed as 3

(ii) The keys are subjected to shear and compressive


stresses. The pins are subjected to shear and bending
stresses. On the basis of strength criterion, plain carbon
steel of grade 30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2) is selected for the
keys and the pins.
The factor of safety for the keys and the pins is taken as
2.5.
It is assumed that the compressive yield strength is 150%
of the tensile yield strength.
(iii)Flanges have complicated shape and the economic
method to make the flanges is casting. Grey cast iron of grade
FG 200 (Sut = 200 N/mm2) is selected as the material for the
flanges from manufacturing considerations.
It is assumed that the ultimate shear strength is one-half of
the ultimate tensile strength.
The factor of safety for the flanges is assumed as 5.5, since
the permissible stress is based on the ultimate strength and
not on the yield strength.
i. Design of shaft
a. Calculate the diameter of shaft (d)

From above equation, the diameter of shaft ‘d’ can be calculated.

ii. Design of hub


Hub is considered as a hollow shaft it is subjected to a torsional shear stress.
The torsional shear stress induced in the hub is given by

where, Outer diameter of hub, D = 2d


and length of hub, L = 1.5 d

For the safety of hub against shear failure, the induced torsional shear stress
in the hub must be less than the allowable shear stress.
iii. Design of flange
The flange is subjected to direct shear stress at the junction with the hub.
∴ T = Shear force × Outside radius of hub

Shear force = Shear area × Direct shear stress


Shear area = Circumference of hub × Thickness of flange

Where, tf = Thickness of flange = 0.5 d


& tp= thickness of protective flange = 0.25 d

iv. Design of pins


Figure shows the pin with rubber bush.
The design of the pin is as follows:
a. Select the number of pin ‘n’
n = 3 for d upto 30 mm
n = 4 for d upto 75 mm
n= 6 for d upto 110 mm
n= 8 for d upto 150 mm
b. Nominal diameter of the pin (db)
The nominal diameter of the pin is determined by using the empirical relation,

The standard nominal diameter is selected


c. Diameter of enlarged portion of pin (d1):
The diameter of enlarged portion of pin is taken as,
d1 = db + 4
d. Outer diameter of rubber bush (d2)
It is assume that, the brass bush of 2mm thickness and rubber bush of 6 mm
thickness are fitted on the enlarged portion of pin.
Hence, the outer diameter of rubber bush is
d2 = d1 + (2 × 2) + (2 × 6), mm
e. Diameter of bolt circle (D1)
Considering the distance of 8 mm between the outer surface of the hub and
the rubber bush, the diameter of bolt circle is,
D1 = D + d2 + (2 × 8) mm
f. Length of bush in flange (Lb)

Length of bush in flange is calculated by considering the bearing pressure


on the pin.

Bearing force acting on each pin is,

F = Bearing pressure × Projected area of pin


F = Pb× d2× Lb
Torque transmitted,

From the above equation, the length of bush in flange


‘Lb’ can be calculated
g. Stresses induced in pin
As each pin is rigidly fastened by nut to one of the
flanges, it acts as a cantilever beam. The uniformly
distributed load acting on the pin is equivalent to a
point load ‘F’ acting at the centre of length ‘lb’.
Due to this force ‘F’ the pin is subjected to a bending
stress and direct shear stress.
a. Bending stress in pin
The maximum bending moment acting on the pin is,

∴ The maximum bending stress induced in the pin is,

The direct shear stress induced in the pin is,

v. Outer diameter of flange (D2)

The outer diameter of flange is taken such that the bolt circle is at equidistance
from the outer surface of the flange and the outer surface of the hub.

vi. Design of key

Let L be the lengths of key,

length of key, L = length of hub


With these dimensions of key, check the shear and compressive stresses in
the key.
