In each scenario below, only one of the people meets all of the three criteria.
Identify who and in your answer provide details that will support how the three
criteria are all met. 6 pts
1. Sharon and Tom live in New York. Sharon feels nervous when she goes to
parties until she has one or two drinks. At the party, she chats with others
even though she feels shy.
Tom makes excuses to avoid going out with co-workers after work. As far as
anyone knows, he doesn’t have any friends and doesn’t seem to want any.
He does his job but has lost several opportunities for advancement because
he doesn’t socialize.
I believe that Sharon has a diagnosable problem. The reason for this is because
Tom just chooses not to socialize, it doesn't say that he can't, he just chooses not
to be, he also has several opportunities for advancement which is a positive on
his side. On the other hand, Sharon is shy and feels nervous at parties which is a
problem with her emotional and cognitive behavior. The alcohol then affects her
behavior making her do things she wouldnt do when sober.
2. Mary and Shana both live and work in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Mary
has developed a fear of elevators. To avoid them she climbs 5 flights to get to
her apartment and 4 for her job. She is very embarrassed about her fear and
has gone to great lengths to conceal it. She frequently feigns illness,
forgetfulness, or in other ways avoids others so she doesn’t leave work or her
apartment at the same time.
Since Shana was a child she has been afraid of clowns. If one is present at an office or
family party she is quiet and stays near the back of the room until the clown leaves.
There is a balloon store on the same floor as her workplace and she walks past it in a
hurry to avoid any potential clowns on the way to work. If one is on the elevator with her
she avoids looking in the clown’s direction.
In my opinion, I believe that both have the problem, but if we had to choose one
then I think it is Mary. The reason I think this is because she avoids many
encounters with people because she is embarrassed and even goes as far as
faking that she forgot something or that she is ill. On the other hand even though
Shana has a problem with clowns, she has faced a clown in an elevator, even
though she doesn't look at the clown, she has come close to it.
3. Sam and Leah live in a small town in Kentucky. Sam is an artist who sells her
works nationally and has filled her front yard with her sculptures, many
portraying nude figures. She’s also let her grass grow uncut and calls her
yard her “Garden of Eden” and has art events there with the local artist
community. The neighbors are upset and want her behavior to change.
Leah can often be found near the downtown square with her flowered
shopping bag, talking to “people who aren’t there.” She lives on charity. Most
of the persons who work around the square keep an eye out for her because
they knew her mother.
I believe Leah has the problem. Leah talking to “people who aren't there” just
shows that she has a problem in cognitive, emotional, basic functions areas, and
a response that is not typical. Leah meets all the 3 criteria. She is cognitive and
emotional because I believe she is affected by the death of her mother from “
Most of the persons who work around the square keep an eye out for her because
they knew her mother.” This could have affected her emotions too much that it
has her having behavior problems which is maybe “talking to her deceased
mother”. She meets severe impairment and distress from her “talking to people
who aren't there” in public, people find her near the downtown square, showing
that she wanders off in public, plus they said she lives on charity. SHowing that
she isn't able to work and make money which is a severe impairment. The last
criteria she has met is a response not typical or culturally expected, Leah is
“talking to people not there” it is not normal for a person to be doing that and that
fact that many people keep an eye on her shows thats she has done some odd
things that aren't expected.
