01 - 3758 - ZG80 - WM - Master Data - Material Master

The document provides documentation on material master processes in SAP. It describes 3 key steps: 1) defining a material as a product or material, 2) assigning a material type of WHIM or WHAW, and 3) maintaining the material master record in transaction ZB05/ZB06. The material master contains all relevant data for a company's materials, such as descriptions, prices, and planning parameters. It ensures consistent material data across all SAP modules.

2. Material type Material type WHIM <-> WHAW

 General information about WHAW and WHIM:

– WHAW is trading goods
– WHIM open packages (not stock leaders)

Example:
Difference between WHAW and WHIM, using product 08902221. The prod-
uct has two pack sizes with the same presentation
08902221 081 1
08902221 081 24
Normally for every pack size there is one storage area defined, in this case
you can take a single item from the box, this would save the extra storage
space needed for the individual item, so both pack sizes would use the same
storage location.

Therefore thus the article 08902221 081 1 is WHIM (not stock leader).
This means we only have a storage location for the 24 pack size, but we can
also pick individual pieces from the storage location

Therefore the article

08902221 081 1 = WHIM
08902221 081 24 = WHAW

3. Material The material master database (often referred to simply as the "material mas-
Master ter", comprising all the individual material master records stored in the sys-
tem) contains descriptions of all materials that an enterprise procures, pro-
duces, and keeps in stock. It is the central repository of information on ma-
terials (such as inventory levels) for the enterprise.

The integration of all material data in a single materials database eliminates

the problem of data redundancy and permits the data to be used not only by
Purchasing, but by other applications (such as Inventory Management, Mate-
rials Planning and Control, Invoice Verification, and so on).
Descriptions of the individual materials used in an enterprise are stored in ma-
terial master rec-ords.

The following list shows some types of information a material master record
contains and provides examples of each:

•Basic Data Views

Basic views are views with general or basic information about our material
such as
Material description, Base unit of measure, Weight, Material group . etc

•Accounting
Valuation and costing/price calculation information. Examples: Standard
price, past and fu-ture price, and current valuation.

•Materials planning and control

Information for material requirements planning (MRP) and consumption-
based plan-ning/inventory control. Examples: Safety stock level, planned de-
livery time, and reorder level for a material.
