OBJECTIVE 9
Designed, adapted and implemented teaching strategies
that are responsive to learners with disabilities, giftedness and talents
PROMT #1
Context: Clara is often seen restless or unfocused in class. She also has troubles following instructions and skips
activities when left unsupervised.
Action Taken: You had a conference with her parents and found out from them that Clara was diagnosed with a
learning disability.
How will you modify the instructions for Clara to keep her focus on classroom activities? Write your reflections in this
form. Mention in your reflections a specific learning disability that you are familiar with or have researched on.
Children with learning disabilities need some additional support and modifications in their environment, as
well as in the type of activities they do. Clara’s problem according to the internet research, could be that she has
APD or Auditory Processing Disorder. Individuals with APD may confuse the order of sounds or be unable to filter
different sounds, like a teacher’s voice or a background noise. In APD the brain misinterprets the information
received and processed from the ear. I noticed that Clara has a hard time registering and remembering what she
hears that’s why she is often unfocused in class and has trouble in following instructions.
To keep I choose to make my classroom more adaptive and engaging to avoid losing her attention. To help
Clara focus on the classroom activities. I intend to teach her concept in different ways and can practice it many times
for her learn and remember it. I will be concreter as possible in teaching. By using Hands-on learning activities, she
will be using all her senses that will help her learn and retain the information better. I will use more visual tools,
visual and gestures, and I make sure Clara is looking at me. I prefer to show rather tell as much as possible. I also
utilized tone and speak more slowly, yet clearly, to emphasize essential points. I will also have a regularly exchange
of information with the parents and work with them to meet the needs of Clara.
To ease Clara’s frustrations and raise her self-esteem in the classroom, I make sure she is writing down tasks
in assisting in staying her organized. I assured that Clara was involved in the classroom that she received the same
level of knowledge as her classmates that do not have a learning disability.
