This module discusses basic calculus concepts involving derivatives. Specifically, it covers implicit differentiation, differentiation of logarithmic and inverse trigonometric functions, and solving related rates problems using implicit differentiation. The module expects students to carefully complete the activities, which involve illustrating implicit differentiation through examples, solving implicit differentiation problems, and solving related rates problems. It also provides instructions for students and expectations for anyone assisting with learning at home.

Implicit Differentiation
An equation involving x and y determines a value of y corresponding to each value of x in some range
and therefore determines y as a function of x. The function is defined explicitly by an equation of the
form y = f(x). However, it may happen that x and y are connected by an equation not solved for y; for
example, x² + y² = 3bxy. Then, y is called an implicit function of x.

Example 1) Differentiate: 4y² - 2x³ - 10 - 2y³ = 0

Solution:

Antiderivative of Function (Integration)

Integration is the inverse process of differentiation. In differentiation, we are given a function and we are
required to find its derivative or differential co-efficient. In integration, the derivative of some function is
given and we are required to find that function.

Figure 1.0

Some practical applications of the Integral Calculus includes computation of plane areas (rectangular
coordinates and polar coordinates), computation of volume: solids of revolution (circular disks and
cylindrical shells), surfaces of revolution, centroid of plane area, centroid of solid, computation of fluid
pressure and exponential growth and decay.

Problems Involving Exponential Growth and Decay

The laws of natural growth and decay states that the rate of change of quantities with respect to time is
proportional to their size at a given instant.

y(t) = y(𝟎)𝐞𝐤𝐭 or 𝐲(𝐭) = 𝐲(𝟎) 𝐞𝐤𝐭

Where: y(0) = initial amount of the growing quantity when t = 0

k = constant that represents the growth rate
t = time

Example 1) In a liquid culture, the amount of bacteria doubles every 6 minutes. If the amount of bacteria
present initially is 3,000, how long will it take before there will be 150,000? The amount of bacteria
increases exponentially.
Solution:
a) y(t) = y(0) ekt

y = 3,000 ekt t = 6 minutes, y = 3,000 x 2 = 6,000

b) 6,000 = 3,000 ek(6)

6,000
= e6 k ; ek(6) = 2
3,000

ln 2
6k = ln 2 ; k=
6

k = 0.11552

c) y = 3,000 ekt

y = 3,000 e0.11552 t

Replace y by 150,000
150,000
150,000 = 3,000 e0.11552 t ; = e0.11552 t
3,000

50 = e0.11552 t

ln 50
0.11552 t = ln 50 ;t=
0.11552

T = 33.86 minutes ans.
