DIRECTED OBSERVATION
EXPERIMENT NO-1
Introduction:
Observation is an art which helps us to have knowledge of the environment. This Knowledge is very
essential to deal with an environment effectively and efficiently.
Observation and its accuracy are influenced by subjective and objective factors such as complexity of an
environment, age, gender, attitude, physical and mental conditions at the time of observation.
Observation differs from individual to individual and time to time. Observation is of two types:
a) Naturalistic/controlled observation
b) Participant /non-participant observation.
a) Naturalistic observation: It is a study of behaviour as it occurs in a natural setting. Observation means
“looking at”. It is viewing with a purpose in an accurate manner. Scientific observation seeks detailed
answers to all the questions.
Controlled observation: Observation is done by controlling the variables to obtain the results.
INSTRUCTION:
“With the signal start , I will present the picture for a brief duration. Observe it carefully as you will
have to answer the questions”.
PRECAUTIONS:
1.Non-suggestive questions should be direct and suggestive questions should be misleading so as to
make the subject accept what is not in the picture.
2. Simple questions should be direct. Refer to the items observed in the picture. Detailed questions must
refer to minute details and must demand keen observation.
3.Answers to the questions should be in one or two words.
4. The subject should not be aware of the aim of the experiment.
CONCLUSION: The results are in accordance with /contradictory to the hypothesis. (based on the result
choose one)
