UGBS 210 ASSIGNMENT 1

i. The error in sentence (I) is a misplaced modifier; the modifier ‘gold’ which
should pre-modify ‘watch’ has been misplaced, making it describes ‘man’ instead.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

On his way to school, Kofi found a man’s gold watch.

ii. The error in sentence (ii) is a misplaced adverb; the adverb ‘slowly’ which should be
placed before or near the verb ‘ate’ has been misplaced.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

The boys slowly ate the launch that they bought.

iii. The error in sentence (iii) is a misplaced phrase; the phrase ‘the customer with fresh
meat’ which should pre-modify the noun has been misplaced, creating a sentence that
does not make sense.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

Mensah sold the food with fresh meat to the customer.

iv. The error in sentence (iv) is a dangling modifier; the dangling modifier phrase ‘when
nine years old’ which should be changed to a subordinate’s clause (I was) is missing
from the sentence.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

When I was nine years old, my mother enrolled in medical school.

v. The error in sentence (v) is a split infinitive; the infinitive ‘to’ is separated from its
verb by other words instead.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

I was told always to pay attention in class.

vi. The error in sentence (vi) is a sentence fragment; the sentence ‘when we got in the
car’ is dependent on the independent clause that follows it.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

When we got in the car, we rolled down the window.

vii. The farmer along with his cows rises early. This sentence is a subject-verb
agreement.
This is because a singular subject takes a singular verb even if there is a phrase or
clause between them.

viii. Neither the station master nor the drivers have the right of way. This sentence is a
subject-verb agreement. This is because compound subject goes with verb in number
and in person with the nearest subject.

ix. The error in the sentence (ix) is a parallel construction with coordinating conjunction;
the verb phrase ‘being expelled’ is a verb that does not match with the noun
‘suspension’
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

At University of Ghana, cheating can result in suspension or even expulsion from the
school.

x. The error in the sentence (x) is a parallel construction in series; the verb phrase ‘go to
the mall’ does not match with the nouns (dancing and swimming) in the sentence.
The sentence should therefore be corrected as:

The two girls enjoyed dancing, swimming and shopping.

xi. He wore a loose belt.

This is because ‘loose’ in the sentence means ‘not secure’.
