Experiment - 1 Aim - : Circuit Diagram - Meter Bridge

The document describes an experiment to measure an unknown resistance using a meter bridge. The apparatus includes a meter bridge, galvanometer, resistance box, battery eliminator, jockey, resistance wire and connecting wires. The meter bridge circuit diagram is shown. Observations of the length of the meter bridge wire and calculations of the unknown resistances are recorded in a table for different known resistances from the resistance box. The mean of the calculated unknown resistances is taken to be the value of the unknown resistance, which is found to be 0.55 ohms. Precautions for the experiment include ensuring all plugs and connections are tight and clean. Sources of error include dirty plugs and loose instrument screws.

Experiment – 1

Aim –
To find resistance of a given wire using meter bridge.

Apparatus – A meter bridge , a galvanometer, a resistance box, a battery eliminator, a jockey, a

resistance wire, connecting wires and sand paper.

Theory –
It is based on balanced Wheat Stone Bridge.

(I) The unknown resistance X is given by :

(100−𝑙)
X= ×𝑅
𝑙
Where R = known resistance placed in left gap.
X = unknown resistance in the right gap of meter bridge

l = Length of meter bridge wire from zero and upto balance point (in cm)

Result –
1. The value of unknown resistance X =0.55 ohm

Precautions –
1. All the plugs in the resistance box should be tight.
2. The connections should be neat, clean and tight.
3. The plug in key K should be inserted only when the observation are to be taken.
4. Move the jokey gently over the bridge wire and do not rub it.

Sources of Error –
1. The plugs may not be clean
2. The instrument screws may be loose.
